Now Frankenstein can have a pet jellyfish. A team of scientists has taken the heart cells of a rat, arranged them on a piece of rubbery silicon, added a jolt of electricity, and created a “Franken-jelly.” Just like a real jellyfish, the artificial jelly swims around by pumping water in and out of its bell-shaped body. Researchers hope the advance can someday help engineers design better artificial hearts and other muscular organs.

    Interesting article.

You have to laugh at the use of silicon instead of silicone in an article in "ScienceNOW".

I'll bet those people who eat dried jellyfish will think twice about their next purchase. icon_lol.gif

I agree. Jellyfish are evil, revolting, and also possibly aliens. Why we'd want to make MORE jellyfish is incomprehensible.

Not going to be a debby downer here, but this really isn't an advancement...

The only reason it is moving is becuase of the electric current, and that is causing the cells to jolt inward... Not pump water on purpose.. as the cells tension relax, the movement comes naturally... I really think this "idea" was more or less for fun rather then helping hearts pump. I'm sure someone with that artificial heart would LOVE to be shocked every second to get his heart to pump...icon_wink.gif
