Well, I'm not a fan of imposing 'American' values (especially bigoted values) on other nations. But in the case of Africa, they really don't need help from the US right because they're plenty homophobic all on their own.

Gays in Africa already have a big battle on their hands without these evil dickheads stirring up more trouble. Be nice if they focused on the 'real' sexual issue amongst the ranks of churches 'paedophilia'

    Hypersensitive gays are hypersensitive.

I'm pretty sure that msuNtx was referring to actual monkeys on the island of Madagascar and not slurring gay Africans affected by homophobic legislation.

Uuuuum, I'm pretty sure he's talking about a popular G-rated cartoon trilogy about animals. If that's the case, then it's not a racist remark.

Maybe that's lost in the generation gap?icon_rolleyes.gif

He clearly hasn't read The Poisonwood Bible. If he did he would know that this doesn't end well

Good book, but imperialism is different than missionary work--not that I think either of them are worthwhile pursuits.

The US Christian right has nothing to do with the extremes that these African countries are implementing against gays. One thing is being against gay marriage or trying to suppress the "open" presence of gays and another is persecuting and going as far as imprisoning and killing gay people.

Trying to continually pin this on American Christian fundamentalists is just plain stupid.

I'm pretty sure only religious people actively try to oppress gays, so who would you rather we blame????

I'll overlook the fact that you can't spell the name of the movie.

I think it's safe to assume that you have seen it, but why assume the rest of the educated world has seen that fantastic, award-winning film as well? And how dare anybody not know of Madagascar's one liners and their influence on modern pop culture. icon_rolleyes.gif

I swear, some of you wouldn't know common sense if it punched you in the face.

Do you really want to go there?

Perhaps you should do some research before you dig an even deeper hole for yourself.

I was not trying to be a smart ass or a jerk. I was just trying to clarify it was not a racial slur. Just trying to help out someone who it looked like was about to get raked over the coals for a simple misunderstanding.

I actually enjoy your posts Credo and 99% of the time agree with them so I hope my post did not come off as me being bitchy. Just helping out another poster who I also enjoy his posts from possibly getting run over about a simple misunderstanding.

And yes I misspelled the name of the movie. My mistake.

There are at least two commandments that these "Christians" ignore with impunity:

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor, and

    Thou shalt not steal.

Those promulgating homophobia in Africa know perfectly well that they are lying, i.e., bearing false witness, since they are well aware that homosexuality is not a colonial import but rather existed in Africa centuries before Africa was colonized. They tend to be very Machiavellian; they believe that any lie is acceptable to support their agendum. It should be pointed out over and over again to them that they are bearing false witness.

Now, regarding stealing. These same "Christian" reactionaries assert that the U.S. was from the beginning a Christian nation. Either they are ignorant of the fact that the Founding Fathers were not all Christians (many were deists) and explicitly stated that the U.S. was not a Christian nation but rather supported total freedom of religion, or they are lying. If the U.S. had, from the beginning been a Christian nation, then why was land stolen from the indigenous Americans? Why were the Japanese-Americans incarcerated during World War II and their property stolen from them? Obviously both were stealing and completely unacceptable according to Christian principals.

These "Christian conservatives" set a lousy example for acting according to Christian principals. That is the reason that people are turning away from organized religion; they see the widespread hypocrisy in it.
