For the first time in history - one of our political parties will endorse same sex marriage in its official party platform.

This will be an historic moment and a huge leap forward in achieving equal rights for gay Americans.

WarmJock saidAnd it took them so long why?

And they didn't even try to legislate gay marriage on the Federal level when their caucus controlled BOTH houses of Congress during the first two years of Obama's term because?

So go ahead and celebrate MORE lip service from the do-nothing Democrats.

The Democrats didn't do that because there was not a majority in either house of congress that supported marriage rights. The thing is that, over time, the Democrats have become better on the issue. Republicans have not made similar progress, unfortunately.

I do think it's good that opposition to marriage rights is becoming the "non-mainstream" position in the Democratic Party.

Because President Obama was busy working on cleaning up all the epic messes left behind by Bush - and because the Democrats didn't have enough votes to overcome the total opposition of the Repubs and a handful of conservative Blue Dog Dems.
