Conservative filmmaker behind ‘2016: Obama’s America’ says he ‘learned some lessons’ from Michael Moore, prepares for wide release

By Hollie McKay, July 30, 2012

    Dinesh_Hawaii-L.jpg

LOS ANGELES – Produced by Oscar-winning producer Gerald Molen and directed by conservative journalist Dinesh D’Souza, the controversial documentary “2016: Obama’s America” takes audiences on a journey into President Obama’s roots, painting a disturbing portrait of what it says are his plans for America if elected for a second term.

The film has yet to open wide in the U.S., but it has already caused a box office splash in Texas. The documentary opened in a single theater in July in the Lone Star State, grossing almost $32,000 in its opening weekend, with moviegoers waiting as much as 90 minutes to meet the filmmakers.

In early August, “2016” will open in over 400 screens across the country, so while it has already gotten a lot of pushback, it can expect a lot more.

The Texas theater’s manager told The Hollywood Reporter that he received complaints over the decision to show the film, and other news outlets have accused D’Souza of basing his documentary on lies. The moviemaker says he welcomes the controversy, and, ironically, says he got the idea on how to frame his documentary from another filmmaker with very different political leanings, the liberal director Michael Moore.

“When he released ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ in 2004 ahead of the election, it sparked intense debate. I learned some lessons from Michael Moore, and hopefully he might learn some lessons from me about handling facts,” D’Souza told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “This film is a thriller, whatever you think and regardless of your politics, you are going to leave this movie going ‘wow, I had no idea this was the man that has been in the White House for the past four years.”

D’Souza, who sparked debate several years ago with his book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage,” uses Obama’s words and the words of those close to him to piece together what the President may really mean by the phrase “hope and change.”

“The reason we called it ‘2016’ is because we want audiences to question what the implications are, and what the world would look like in 2016 if he is re-elected,” D’Souza said. “It is a real mystery how he managed to convince so many Americans to vote for him, and how some of his deepest beliefs have gone unscrutinized.”

In addition to revisiting Obama’s close relationship with controversial pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, “2016” probes other seemingly radical leaders and professors D’Souza says shaped the 44th President’s political leanings. It goes on to explore the dramatic deficit the U.S. has accumulated during his term, and expresses D’Souza’s own concerns regarding how things might play out if Obama is granted another term and no longer has to be concerned about getting reelected.

The Office of the Press at the White House did not respond to a request for comment.

D'Zousa is an embarrassment to even the lunatic fringe of the far right.

That you tout him says you've completely lost your grip on reality.

He is a highly respected author. From your own perspective, which you have described as being a Democratic Socialist, everything from moderate-left, center, moderate-right, and far-right will seem to you as the fringe of the far right. Don't feel bad; that's just the way it is.

Looking forward to seeing this movie and getting the messages out to many more.

No. He's not a highly respect author. His article in Forbes on which this film is based was roundly panned for its utter lack of scholarship or journalist integrity.

Of course, from your view in the right-wing terrarium, he's "respected." To the rest of the world, he's a ridiculous crank.

From the author, speech on what really drives Obama. We know he is not a typical Democrat like Clinton or even Jimmy Carter, so what drives him and what would he seek to do if reelected and not worried about public opinion. What are the Dreams From His Father? Democrat or Republican, this is must watch before voting in the most important election in recent history.

Part of what the movie is about comes from Obama's book, "Dreams From My Father". Instead of worrying about the movie author, we should be looking at the source material. Then the questions become is Obama not just a liberal, but also an anti-colonialist driven by a desire to weaken the US? The question transcends the left versus right and raises the more fundamental question of what drives him and what his real goal is for the US and successive generations.

The narrative will focus even more on Obama and what he really is. We already know his attitude towards the private sector. His true feelings about that as well as the simple people who cling to their guns and their religion has consistently come out during the off-teleprompter moments. We also know his true desire to use taxes not for revenue but for wealth redistribution. We also know his attitude about subordinating the US, including supporting measures to redistribute US wealth to other countries, instead of addressing problems in those countries.

All the pieces were visible in front of our noses. Now the movie based on Obama's autobiography that so scares the likes of Christian pulls things together to show us a person ideologically hellbent to weaken our country, going far beyond the agenda of the US left. The need to rid the country of this malignancy makes questions of where Romney stores his money ludicrous at best.

First of all, Obama's barely new his father and that comes from the "source material."

Second, even if he did, D'Souza's preposterous claim that Obama holds his father's political views is just ridiculous. I don't have the same views as my father, despite having known him a lot better than the president did his own.

Third, right-wing movies of this sort only generate publicity in your little terrarium of the Brietbart-sphere while being ignored by the vast majority of the country.

So good luck with all that. You'll need it.

This is the same garbage the WND Fanatical Tbagger and Christian Fundi site put out a week or so ago that I called attention to. This film is nothing but one lie and exageration after another. A propaganda film pure and simple which does nothing but induce the 'sheeple' to vote against their own interests through fear mongering..

    ITS MEDIA GARBAGE !!

To those who feebly complain about the movie, consider the source comes significantly from Obama's own autobiography. But even more simply, consider Obama's own words during the past few years, his one world attitude, why would they think his spread the wealth, economic justice, and fairness talk stop at our borders? It helps explain why he really doesn't worry about the debt knowing it will weaken us. When you don't believe in or like the private sector, you think total wealth is a constant and the only way to help the poor is to take from the rich. In his view this applies to nations as well as classes within a nation. I have told liberals that he is not like them or like a Bill Clinton. To the ones who worry about the 1%, I tell them in his big scheme of things, they are in his 1%, considering the world population. I tell those who feel empathy for the starving poor in other continents that instead of realizing corrupt dictators have made their problems worse, he simply wants to take our money and throw it at them.

many of your statements are false. ahhh...where to begin...

well...I don't have time for all of them. So I will try this one:
-"It helps explain why he really doesn't worry about the debt knowing it will weaken us."

When has he ever stated that he does not care about the debt? The government has cut its growth...not increased it...since he has been in office, many thousands of government jobs have been cut.

    Obama spending binge never happened
Commentary: Government outlays rising at slowest pace since 1950s

Of all the falsehoods told about President Barack Obama, the biggest whopper is the one about his reckless spending spree.

And by the way, 92% of Americans want a more Equalden distribution in America...that includes people that are Republicans and Democrats.

If he does not care about the debt, then why would he not increase spending in the government at least as much as the presidents before him have, especially when the WORLD economy has been so bad?

Of course he doesn't come out and say he doesn't care about the debt. It is obvious from his actions. The debt has increased dramatically under his watch. You can try and deflect by providing reasons for part of the debt increase not in response to his actions, but he overtly did not follow the recommendations of Bowes-Simpson, his own commission. Recent spin from the left was that he did follow the major recommendations, but it was so easily absurd it was debunked.

Simple questions: Why does the Administration want to bankrupt the coal industry even though they have developed clean burning technologies? Why has the Administration dug its heals on drilling on public land, but encourages Brazil and Mexico to drill. Why did Obama tell Brazil he wanted the US to be Brazil's best customer. Could it be to help transfer wealth out of the US to Brazil?

Bottom line - this one world guy wants to spread our wealth. The US middle class is part of the 1% elite in Obama's one world view and he wants to do something about it.

realifedad This is the same garbage…

jockfever: The Left is what it accuses its opponents of being.

So when you hear the Left call a bestselling author like Dinesh D'Souza a "crank" an "embarrassment" and his works "garbage" the logical conclusions about the accusers should be obvious.

D'Souza is also a scholar, debater, intellectual, former White House staffer, and college president.

His article in Forbes was attacked by the usual Obama hacks. Responding to the White House, Forbes agreed to submit the article to fact-checking and only minor inconsequential items were found.

D'Souza's theory, that Obama is driven by an anti-colonialist need to destroy the U.S. private sector and destroy the US as a world superpower, was called "stunningly insightful" by Newt Gingrich.

The argument that Obama didn't know his biological father is true and irrelevant. His father substitute is a composite of his father's supposed anti-colonialist fantasies, hence, "Dreams From my Father."

It's amazing that those who are still pimping for an anti-American serial liar, as well as his destructive policies, think they are competent to attack anyone else's credibility.

metta8 many of your statements are false. Obama spending binge never happened. Commentary: Government outlays rising at slowest pace since 1950s

jockfever: The deficit spending under George Bush was repeatedly opposed by conservatives. Spending under Bush now looks relatively tame compared to the Obama-Pelosi-Reid spending orgy.

Under Bush, the national debt rose by an average of about $600 billion a year. Obama called that "unpatriotic."

During Obama's presidency, the national debt has risen by an average of $1.7 trillion a year.

Smoke-and-mirrors charts can't hide the fact that Obama-Pelosi-Reid added $5 trillion the national debt in about four years, triggering the first US credit downgrade.

Obama's jackass stimulus spending is now part of the federal spending baseline, and $1 trillion+ deficits are projected for as far as the eye can see.

That's why there's a chapter in D'Sousa's upcoming book about the $20 Trillion debt bomb being a weapon of mass destruction. If you want to destroy a civil society, jackass debt accumulation is one weapon and Greece is an example of how it's done.

The Democrat Party and the out-of-control federal spending/debt feed off of each other. Conservatives offer the only antidote to fiscal madness.

Box Office Report: Anti-Obama Doc Drawing Big Crowds, Even in New York City

Already the No. 2 grossing documentary of the year, "2016: Obama's America" expands nationwide this weekend.

An anti-Obama documentary based on conservative author Dinesh D’Souza’s book The Roots of Obama’s Rage will expand nationwide this weekend after doing notable business in select markets across the country -- including in liberally minded New York City.

Overall, 2016: Obama's America grossed an impressive $1.2 million last weekend as it upped its theater count from 61 to 169 for a total gross of $2 million, the second-best showing of the year for a documentary after Bully ($3.2 million). That doesn't include nature documentaries Chimpanzee ($29 million) and To the Arctic ($7.6 million).

It's already the No. 12 political documentary of all time -- a market that Michael Moore has cornered -- as well as the No. 2 conservative documentary after Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed ($7.7 million).
On Friday, Obama's America, co-directed by D'Souza and John Sullivan, will be playing in 1,075 theaters in an aggressive expansion that comes on the eve of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., which gets underway Aug. 27.

    By Thomas Sowell on 8.22.12 @ 6:03AM

Dinesh D'Souza's 2016 is must viewing.

Years, and sometimes decades, pass between my visits to movie theaters. But I drove 30 miles to see the movie 2016, based on Dinesh D'Souza's best-selling book, The Roots of Obama's Rage. Where I live is so politically correct that such a movie would not even be mentioned, much less shown.

Every seat in the theater was filled, even though there had been an earlier showing that day, and more showings were scheduled for the rest of the afternoon and evening. I had to sit on a staircase in the balcony, but it was worth it.

The audience was riveted. You could barely hear a sound from them, or detect a movement, and certainly not smell popcorn. Yet the movie had no bombast, no violence, no sex and no spectacular visual effects.

The documentary itself was fascinating, as Dinesh D'Souza presented the story of Barack Obama's life and view of the world, in a very conversational sort of way, illustrating it with visits to people and places around the world that played a role in the way Obama's ideas and beliefs evolved.

It was refreshing to see how addressing adults as adults could be effective, in an age when so many parts of the media address the public as if they were children who need a constant whirlwind of sounds and movements to keep them interested.

Dinesh D'Souza's own perspective, as someone born in India who came to America and became an American, provided a special insight into the way people from the Third World often perceive or misperceive the United States and the Western world.

That Third World perspective is Obama's perspective, D'Souza demonstrates in this documentary, as in his book -- and it is a perspective that is very foreign to that of most Americans, which may be why some believe that Obama was born elsewhere.

D'Souza is convinced that the president was born in Hawaii, as he claims, but argues that not only Obama's time living in Indonesia but also his emotionally charged visits to his father's home in Africa have had a deep and impassioned effect on his thinking.

The story of Barack Obama, however, is not just the story of how one man came to be the way he is. It is a much larger story about how millions of Americans came to vote for, and some to idolize, a man whose fundamental beliefs and values are so different from their own.

For every person who sees Obama as somehow foreign there are many others who see him as a mainstream American political figure -- and an inspiring one.

This D'Souza attributes to Barack Obama's great talents in rhetoric, and his ability to project an image that resonates with most Americans, however much that image may differ from, or even flatly contradict, the reality of Obama's own ideological view of the world.

    What is that ideological view?

The Third World, or anti-colonial, view is that the rich nations have gotten rich by taking wealth from the poor nations. It is part of a much larger vision, in which the rich in general have gotten rich by taking from the poor, whether in their own country or elsewhere.

Whatever its factual weaknesses, it is an emotionally powerful vision, to which many people have dedicated their lives, and for which some have even risked their lives. Some of these people appear in this documentary movie, as they have appeared throughout the formative phases of Barack Obama's life.

The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is just the most visible and vocal of a long line of such people who played crucial roles in Obama's evolution. When Jeremiah Wright thundered about how "white folks' greed runs a world in need," he captured the essence of the Third World or anti-colonial vision.

But many of the other mentors, allies, family and friends of Barack Obama over the years were of the same mindset, as this documentary demonstrates.

More important, the movie 2016 demonstrates how so many of Obama's actions as President of the United States, which D'Souza had predicted on the basis of his study of Obama's background, are perfectly consistent with that ideology, however inconsistent it is with the rhetoric that gained him the highest office in the land.

Yes, lets worry about tax returns and abortion like the left has made thier platform for thier convention. Lets not talk about the shitty economy or the shrinking middle class they supposedly stand for or Obams horrible obamacare which America hates or his horrible record on creating jobs. No lets not talk about what Americans say is most important to them. Lets just deflect, blame and change the subject like you crackpots do.

jockfever: The Lib Press surely won't cover Obama's despicable record of lies, lawlessness, corruption, and failure.

And being detached from reality never bothers Libs. Outside the demented Lib bubble, 2016 is scoring better box office sales than Hollyweird big-ticket productions....another reason why Romney will win by a lopsided margin.

"A first-run film that casts new light on Barack Obama’s radical roots already is setting box-office records while an upcoming release that could also unsettle the White House is expected to draw a strong audience.

On the eve of the Republican National Convention, “2016: Obama’s America” is scheduled for showing in 1,074 theaters, approximately one of every four theaters in the U.S., said Jason Jones, president of Movie to Movement, the non-profit organization promoting the film.

Jones told WND it’s the largest one-week expansion of an independent film in history.

He noted that 35 percent of all tickets sold Thursday on Fandango.com, the No. 1 online movie ticket sales company, were for “2016.”

    ,,,

Last week, “2016” had the second highest average box office sales of films in wide release, beating many high-budget films, including “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Bourne Legacy.” It came in in just behind “Expendables 2.”

On the stump, as the president crescendos toward applause lines in his daily speeches, you can see in his eyes that even he is aware of the change. Manufactured enthusiasm and forced smiles substitute for a once-effortless charisma. The roar is gone. The folks still cheer, but the cheers are polite and obligatory.

The scent of Death is overwhelming.

It’s a familiar smell. Remember when John McCain suspended his campaign in September of 2008? During the subprime meltdown, the Republican presidential nominee put “Country First” on hold, charged off to Washington, then heroically voted for the Wall Street bailout just like his opponent and almost every other senator. McCain reeked of Death after that, and a young, impeccably cool Obama looked even younger and cooler in comparison.

How did Barack Obama become John McCain?

Barack isn’t cool anymore. Sure, he’s cooler than Romney, but that’s not the standard. No one expects Mitt to be cool. Barack was in a class by himself — the multi-layered phenom who excited the young and invigorated the jaded. He was the Everyman and the intellectual, the sophisticate and the baller, the worldly son of Chicago who could make words dance off the teleprompter and then top it off by singing some pitch-perfect Al Green.

That’s part of the problem. Barack 2012 is haunted by Barack 2008.

In 2008, Barack was easy to love — even for those who didn’t share his politics. He was Potential personified — a rags-to-riches success story, living proof that the American Dream is alive and well. He represented social progress. By his mere existence, he offered new beginnings, a chance to reconcile past sins and heal generations-old American wounds. He was Newness itself. He was dashing, affable, and athletic. He was a family man, a doting father and husband with a supremely telegenic family.

We remember Obama’s easy charm, the carefree smile, the fresh ideas, and, most of all, the hope. The hope made everything else secondary. Optimism is a perennial bestseller in America, and that’s what Barack was selling in 2008. Amid economic crisis and two wars, Obama said, “Yes, we can!” And that was enough. Obama was a blank slate, and America projected a brighter future onto him.

    And here we are.

Mitt Romney wants to put “y’all back in chains,” according to the second most powerful man in the country. There’s really no need to discuss Medicare or the debt or the economy or unemployment or any other metric that might describe Obama’s America. Joe Biden may be a barely sentient being, but he has correctly intuited the thrust of the re-election strategy. Optimism is a thing of the past. Fear and venom are the new Obama campaign mainstays.

Barack Obama is going to lose in a landslide to Mitt Romney. It won’t even be close. Americans have never experienced the brand of divisive, negative campaign that the Obama team is running. (And it’s going to get worse.) Americans won’t like it, and they’ll blame Obama. He’s going to lose states that have voted Democratic for decades. It’s going to be a devastating loss. A year from now, Jimmy Carter will be compared favorably to Barack Obama.

It’s sad, more than anything else.
