Bain Investor: Romney paid NO TAXES for 10 years - Washington Post Report

    From the Washington Post:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) claimed Tuesday in an interview that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney refuses to release additional tax returns because he didn’t pay taxes for 10 years.

“His poor father must be so embarrassed about his son,” Reid said in reference to George Romney’s decision to turn over 12 years of tax returns when he ran for president in 1968.

Reid suggested that Romney’s decision to withhold tax information would bar him from ever earning Senate confirmation to a Cabinet post. Then, Reid recalled a phone call his office received about a month ago from “a person who had invested with Bain Capital.”

Reid said the person told him: “Harry, he didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years.”

“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that’s true? Well, I’m not certain,” Reid told HuffPo. “But obviously he can’t release those tax returns. How would it look?”

The Romney campaign has previously denied rumors that Romney hasn’t paid taxes in a single year and he recently told ABC News that he couldn’t recall if there were years when he paid below the 13.9 percent tax rate that he paid in 2010.

In that ABC interview, Romney said he would be “happy to go back and look” at his tax records, but his campaign aides haven’t replied to several requests to clarify the former Massachusetts governor’s comments.

Nah, what's really scandalous, Mr. Harry Sock Puppet, is you Conservatives trashing this site with your cowardly flash accounts. No history, no accountability, here today, gone tomorrow. Say anything you want, without repercussions.

Not something we liberals do, just a cheap trick of you Right Wingers here. If you can't win honestly, win by cheating.

    topathlete,

    REMEMBER:

" Romney said he would be “happy to go back and look” at his tax records "

Did you, topathlete, actually see the ABC interview with YOUR MAN MITT?

MITT continues to slip and slither through these questions. It's time he give answers.

Let's be honest: if Romeny paid no taxes for 10 years, his chances of winning are a complete zero. If his best defense is "I paid no taxes for 10 years but I was technically breaking no laws," the entire American middle class will want to barbecue his elitist, privileged rich-boy ass.
If Romney was raking in millions and paying not one cent of taxes, it's because of his shady tax-shelter accounts in foreign countries, and his secret Swiss bank accounts.
The idea that middle-class Americans who are struggling to get by are also shouldering the tax burden of people like Romney, who has figured out how to game the system, will be a non-starter in the electorate.
Why should working families be subsidizing his lavish lifestyle?

I think it's clear that Romney's taxes contain some pretty damning things. Otherwise, he would have released them and been done with it.

    um

97% of the tax collected comes from that "elite" 1% you carelessly complain about NOT the working middle class.

Don't care about Romneys tax situation.. But let's not get FACTS twisted here people..

    um

If Romney paid no taxes for 10 years, then I guess 0% of the taxes collected came from that part of "the elite."

At least now we know why he can't release his taxes. His political aspirations would be finished.

Romneys net worth doesn't compare to the others that do in fact carry the tax burden. You made an improper inference assuming that the tax burden is exclusively placed on the working middle class when statistically it has been proven that e progressive tax regime is more punitive on the "elite" than it is on the backs of ur average joe.

You make more money, you pay more tax... It's rather obvious... Don't twist the facts.

If anyone should be upset it should be the elite not the middle class....

Average family of 4 in the US effective tax rate last year (after all credts and deductions) was a mere 10% if not less

Which is 10% more than Romney paid for 10 years.

I would love to hear his explanation for why he shouldn't contribute anything to the American tax bill.
And now he expects to be rewarded for this kind of behavior?

What's probably interesting is the article does not mention which years...

He could've had the income of a middle class citizen. I'm not condoning his situation, but there's far more middle class citizens not paying tax verses the nominal amount paid by others in a higher tax bracket

Not quite, but you can't tolerate even civil disagreement. When I was on RJ before you were one of the people I avoided. You are one of the nastiest, most hateful people on RJ. Your previous therapy sessions you talked about have obviously not helped. Your recent thread asking if guys would date someone ugly shows your insecurities.

You always talk about blocking others, you should be blocked because you are one very worthless member.

Actually Alan has met a number of RJ members in person, including my partner & me. Your characterization of him is incorrect.

You, on the other hand, are an unknown quantity, appearing to be committing the very same offenses of which you accuse Alan. Your 6-week-old profile promises to be expanded, but as yet remains mostly empty and anonymous. You say you're a former member here, but by this SN or another? Can you not say who you were, for the sake of your former acquaintances here?

@Mark/Art - Ahhh! The sock puppet reveals that it IS a sock puppet! I am very glad to hear that my countertroll efforts are causing aversion to trolls and sock puppets. They know that they will have no comfort while I am around.

Now if only Chris/RealJock would purge these sock puppets from trolls who have been b&hammered. RJ would be a much more civil online community which can focus on welcoming the newcommer who has good to bring.

Isn't it interesting that Romney has NOT DENIED this accusation that he paid no taxes for 10 years? Conservatives with no real facts on the issue rush to label it a lie, but the one person who knows the truth -- Romney himself -- says nothing. Now I wonder why that is ...icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

    topathlete says

"Asking for the returns is one thing, but putting out garbage is a different matter."

GARBAGE? It does seem crazy that someone running for president would pay NO TAXES for even a single year----much less TEN YEARS!

HOW WOULD THAT LOOK if it were ever to be exposed?

Listen, topathlete, I FEEL YOUR PAIN.

When the first reports by DRUDGE of an office intern having sex with MY PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON, I was in total denial. There was no way that my man could be that stupid.

So far, this seems like deja vu: MITT IS BEING CLINTONESQUE, ne c'est pas?

He's giving that frozen smile and "I'll be happy to look into it" line......but notice that his campaign isn't coming forward with any PROOF.

Just like the Monica affair..........THIS SMELLS .....FISHY.

That deafening silence you hear is Romney still not denying this report.
For my money, that means it's likely true.
If someone won't even defend themselves, what does that tell you?

Romney has turned out to be a mediocre candidate at best, and the fact that he's so far behind during this period of economic trouble is evidence that he's squandered what should have been an easy win. People just don't like him, and his shady financial past is not helping him any.

Republicans have every right to be angry at Romney for presenting himself as a candidate with all these skeletons in his closet.
As the Washington Post article outlines, he couldn't even pass the background check for a cabinet position, because of his unwillingness to disclose financial information and his shady connections with offshore tax shelters and secret Swiss bank accounts.
Why would someone with a history this sketchy even run for president? Did he really think no one would ask these questions -- which are the same questions asked of every candidate?

If they had it to do over again, I wonder how many Republicans would have picked a candidate with less baggage?

REPUBLICANS ARE ANGRY and it's making them a little hysterical in their arguments these days.

They realize they've got the equivalent of John Edwards on their hands.

Reid has been around long enough to know better than to put something like this out about Romney unless there's some pretty substantial facts or credibility behind a witness to back it up.

Unless of course he's decided to take up the Republican Bachmann or Gohmert styled tactics of just throwing out some outlandish accusation with the hopes that it will be believed by their sheeple.
