yeah thats exactly what the French said. They looked sooo disappointed when they lost, since they were the favorites heading into the race. It was a great comeback for the U.S. in that last leg. I <3 the olympics!

I don't think i've ever jumped and screamed so much at a swimming race in my life, especially on tv. And I'm a swimmer and I've been swimming for years.

Honestly, the best relay in swimming history.

I still have the chills. Just plain perfect!

It was a great race...

But it's funny - it's very similar to the 2000 Olympics where the American team was doing the trash talking. Gary Hall Jnr had said "We are going to smash you like guitars" to the Australians. That time the Australians won though and the team played air guitar to celebrate......

We Americans are famous for our selective memories.

It's a bug AND a feature ;)

Really? I honestly don't remember that. Guess we do have selective memories.

I will say this, though... for all the trash talking, Phelps was very magnanimous about the whole thing. He stepped down off the first place podium before the anthem and shook hands with all the members of the French team. I don't know if that's just the way he is, or he is handled well by his manager, but I guess it doesn't make THAT much of a difference. It was good to see.

Same for me... on all points! I was so juiced up after seeing that that I couldn't even sleep for a while. Kept thinking about the relay teams I have been a part of, and how it's just the best feeling to win by a touch-out!

The 4 X100 Free Relay is always the most exciting race, I think. When you have at least two really good teams competing, the best swimmers are always in the water and they always seem to turn out the best results. This was no exception... even with the US-France rivalry, the best really came out of everyone for this race. The top FIVE finishers all swam faster than the previous record! So awesome! What a great event!

Actually it was pointed out by Rowdy Gaines during the commentary, and has been in the memory for all American freestyle sprinters since. The US men had owned the 400 free relay before 2000 and this is the end of a nagging sore spot for US Swimming.

Gary is an amazing competitor and a "take not prisoner mouth." Sometimes to the chagrin of other US Swimmers. I think that the minute after he said it, Alain Bernard probably wished he hadn't, given how history can repeat, and did.

But thanks for bring a little America bashing to a celebratory forum post. We can always on the cliched negatively of some of our gay brethern.

Sorry Aquanerd I did say it was a great race - so I donb't really see howe that's negative?

I'm not bashing - just pointing out it's a bit rich to claim the moral high ground and call the French trash talkers when Americans have done the same in the past. If you take that as bashing you probably need to develop a thicker skin.

No need to apologize. You have every right to state how you feel. As I have the right to express mine...

"American's Short Memories," "Moral High Ground." Please explain what moral superiority was involved in any part of the celebration of an amazing come from behind, unexpected victory; the mention of Gary Hall's statement by Rowdy Gaines during the celebration; or any of the posts on this forum?

Mate, I'm not interested in arguing with you - I've expressed my opinion.

If you read some of the posts the thread went from congratulatory to saying the french were trash talking. I pointed out that the States has done that in the past as well. Big deal. I'm not slagging off what was great effort in an amazing race - just making an observation.

Mate,
I don't think there is an argument, just a couple of mutual observations and one unanswered question.

Yes, you still haven't answered how my original post was bashing and negative.

Btw, I didn't mention "short memories" that was another (American ) poster.

My apologies, I thought I was replying to the original poster. I guess I can look forward to a response from another quarter.

And his original post was the one that had your typical self loathing, American gays can always be counted on to bring to the table.

Great job by Adlington and Jackson n the 400M Woman's Free, good to see the Brits back in the game.

Yes the Brits are doing ok in the pool, they are pretty happy with their first women's gold for 48 years (im think it was ) but us Australians are doing slightly better.

Excuse you? All I said was that I didn't recall the air guitar thing... and jokingly added that we must indeed have short memories! That's not self-loathing... that was trying to be humorous. Could you not tell by the emoticon afterward?

And the original post was that the original post was the one where I announced that we touched out the French by .08 seconds. How is THAT self-loathing?

Don't kill this for me, Aquanerd... I'm trying to enjoy the victory.
You're giving me a rash.

Me too (even though I did above)!
Ah well... Back to the relay...
It's not the same group of guys swimming the 4 X 200, right? Van der Kaay is replacing someone from the short relay team, I would think. He's seated 1st in the individual event ahead of Phelps and Park from Korea (man, is that kid fast!)

Ok... some of you need to relax. The guy made an observation(backed by facts); and just because it notes something negative Americans have done, it doesn't mean its "bashing"; its just an observation.

Can't we all just get along?

People were talking about the true amazing race (not that reality trash) and even that leads to a bickering match? Garsh!

Kudos to the team! I love me some Olympics!
