I love Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Jodie Foster, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, and of course Meryl Streep. In the right movie, Goldie Hawn in her day was a hoot.

I'm guessing Romeo + Juliet.

Though what really made that 1993-1995 generation fall in love with her was Mtv's My So-Called Life.

A very underrated yet great actress. The most recent big thing she's been in is The Cabin in the Woods.
Her work in Angel and Dollhouse is spectacular.

My favorite actress is probably Meryl Streep. She has the most transformative ability compared to nearly all actors I can think of at the moment. There's something regal about her that I don't Cate Blanchett comes in at a near second. Being British by birth, she can do an exceptional American (both upper northern and southern) accent. Tilda Swinton, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts are exceptional in this manner also.

For the most part actors basically regurgitate the same persona in every roll they play. I find this especially to be the case with men. That's why I tend to find them boring.

Be that as it may I do like the onscreen presence of many other actresses such as:

Jodie Foster
Judie Dench (such an exquisite voice and those sparkly eyes)
Julianne Moore
Anne Hathaway
Sigourney Weaver (beautiful speaking voice, great for narratives as well)

The OP didn't specify if they had to be current, but my all time fave was Katherine Hepburn- especially 'The African Queen" with Bogie.

I forgot about her , I would put her in one of the top spots. She does give a very intense, raw performance in that movie ( which is one of my favorites) but still I don't see all the subtle nuances that make Meryl Streep or Nicole Kidman's performances so enjoyable to watch.

You can pick one from any era. I would have listed more actresses from old Hollywood but Elizabeth Taylor is the only one that has really left a mark on me.

Ellen Burstyn was phenomenal in that role. Her deterioration in that movie was remarkable.
