Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome

I've been going through a lot the past 6 days with my younger brother in the hospital going on 6 days now. This is the 4th time he has been hospitalized in the past 2 years, each time he was released with only the prognosis that he was "severely dehydrated". This time it appears more severe and long-lasting. These bouts come on with little warning --- severe abdominal pain, nausea, and then violent vomiting. He is not able to hold any food or water down. In fact, even sucking on an ice cube makes him sick. My family is beside themselves because we feel so helpless. 6 days and I don't know how many tests later, the doctors still have no answers. Today, they told us that they think it could be this rare thing called "Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome".

Has anyone here heard of this or have it? We are at our wits end because my brother has not had any food in 6 days. They are feeding him intravenously but, obviously, losing weight rapidly. Any light anyone could shed on this condition would be helpful. We don't even know for sure if this is the definitive prognosis, but in 6 days it is the only thing they even think it could be. My brother is otherwise an extremely healthy, athletic, active man, other than these regular bouts that have landed him in the hospital over the past 2 years 4 times.

Todd, sorry can't help you with your question, but my thoughts are with your brother, you and your family. Hopefully it's treatable and he will be okay.

Let me know if you need anything.

I would suggest your brother keeps a detailed journal containing dietary and emotional information, this could help identify/diagnose what is going on.

sorry I don't have anything more useful.

I've never heard of it. Does he have any other problems or symptoms?

I'm sorry to hear about your brother's illness and hope he gets better.

There are many possible causes of vomiting but I remember when I read the book: "Every Patient Tells a Story" by Lisa Sanders, there was a patient with cyclical episodes of vomiting that had no evidence of a typical cause. The only curious factor was that it was relieved by hot showers.

It turned out she was a chronic marijuana smoker and had a rare condition called 'Cannabinoid Hyperemesis' whereby marijuana triggered her episodes. So she got better in hospital but then relapsed when she went home.

She didn't believe the Dr's, discharged her self and was never seen again.

The story highlighted the fact that in any presenting complaint, there can be rare causes that the treating team may not be aware of. 'Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome' sounds like one of those diagnoses given when everything else possible is ruled out, but it is an unfortunate one as there seems to be no treatment.

I hope they can find the cause of your brother's vomiting.

Thank you to all for you input. Strangely, my brother mentioned that taking a warm shower and letting the warm water hit his stomach was even more of a relief from the pain than the heavy does of morphine they seem to be giving him in the hospital. The only symptoms seem to be severe dehydration, intense abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting to the point that he can't even keep down an ice cube. My brother is an artist and has always been a pot smoker. Thank you so much to those who mentioned Cannabinoid Hyperemesis' because this could very well be a clue to what is causing this. I don't even know if he still smokes pot, but if he does this could be a clue.

Thanks again for all your help!!!

Many GI docs think its just Cannabis withdrawal.

It maybe a chicken or the egg problem. As many go to Cannabis to self medicate.

Why don't you email me with what they discharged him on.

Hopefully they gave him something for nausea such as Odensatron ( Zofran)

I've seen many with cyclical vomiting syndrome but have never actually diagnosed anyone with this...
