I was thinking about this last night...it'll never make sense to me why people could dislike or hate Jews. There are people out there who think that they're in some sort of gigantic conspiracy to take over the world? It's just utterly ridiculous to comprehend. The diaspora is pretty widespread and it's not like all Jews know one another. Is it a misunderstanding of the "chosen lot" where they are perceived to be superior when in fact they're just under the covenant of demonstrating how to live a morally good life? Is it that they're thought to be rich and greedy? A lot of Polish and Russian Jews from the 17th to the end of the 19th Century were quite poor, but still suffered the pogroms and so many traveled to America to try to make a decent living and escape the violence. And the racial concept is even more absurd. Because people can convert to Judaism (although it's pretty uncommon). What is it that people could feel so threatened by? icon_confused.gif

Dunno. Why does racism exist? Or, why does anti-homosexuality exist?

In college, one of my friends (who is Jewish) and I were discussing the same thing. His response?

"I don't understand it! We invented the fucking bagel! It's delicious!"

All other arguments for or against are not needed.

I grew up in Texas in the '70s. While I had Jewish friends, I had never seen a bagel until I got to college in the northeast.

I wondered why anyone would eat fish on a donut.

And there you have it. The difference between Jewish humor and gentile humor. Problem solved.

Jews don't believe in the divinity of Jesus or the idea that Mohammed received the Koran directly from God. So, that instantly makes them more than two billion enemies. After all, there must be something VERY wrong with any group that rejects God or his revelations.

    Why does antisemitism exist?

    Could it be that:

God chose Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel) to be the ancestors of a nation chosen from all other peoples to inhabit a particular land with specific borders?

That God gave the ten Commandments to the nation of Israel?

That the Holy Scriptures were written by Jews for Jews?

That God chose Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, to put his name there forever.

That the Messiah was himself Jewish and was born in a Jewish family in Israel, and was crucified there?

And after he was risen from the dead in Jerusalem, he ascended to Heaven from the Mount of Olives just east of the city?

And that the Return of Christ to reign over the whole Earth will take place in Jerusalem, after the entire Jewish nation is regathered into its own land God had originally gave to Abraham?

That the very fact that the Jew exist today verifies the truthfulness of the Bible and is also a rebuke to Darwinism?

That Eternal life with God in Heaven is given as a free gift to all who believe in Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour?

And that the overall reason why antisemitism exist is because the Adversary knows that if Christ was to return to the Earth as King of kings, his own power on the planet will come to a swift end.

Christ cannot return to Earth until the whole of the Jewish nation is back in its original homeland. Therefore Satan will do all to prevent such regathering. One way is by mass killing, e.g. the Holocaust. Another way is causing strife with the Arab neighbours that would discourage Jewish immigration. Yet another is a high level of abortions taken by Jewish women - so I once read - Israel has one of the highest abortion statistics in the world.

Satan if fighting hard against his own destruction, hence the real force behind antisemitism.

One of my college friends once suggested that Judaism is premised on the belief that Jews are God's "chosen" people and therefore Jewish people must have pissed off their neighbors over the centuries by effectively appearing to show contempt for the "unchosen" people. I suspected that Christian and Muslims were more likely pissed off that Jews simply rejected Jesus and Mohammed respectively, and as we currently see in much of the world today people with medieval mind sets display contempt for anyone who doesn't share their belief.

Because if the existence of the Jew verifies the truthfulness of the Bible, then the book of Genesis, which teaches Creationism (an absolute necessity if Christianity is to have any credibility at all) must also be true as well.

    Darwinism refutes Creationism.

While I agree that Darwanism refutes Creationism, your reasoning is wrong. Jews exist today because Jewish parents has children. Romans also exist today for the same reason. Would you argue that Romans and Greeks exist because of Jupiter and Zeuss?

NotThatOld: Why does antisemitism exist...Satan is fighting hard against his own destruction, hence the real force behind antisemitism.

jockfever: A remarkably erudite and cogent contribution (especially at a site with so many apparent pagans).

One of the best answers (to the OP question) is provided by George Gilder in his book The Israel Test.

There are basically two responses to Jewish excellence: (1) admiration, respect, and gratitude, OR (2) envy, resentment, and hatred, i.e., antisemitism. Satan stands behind the latter.

Jewish intellectual excellence played a critical role in the development of both the atomic bomb and computers.

Practically every computing device has a virtual "Israel Inside" sticker on it.

There are lists of Jews who won Nobel prizes on the 'Net. They are imposing.

The per capita innovation of Israel now probably leads the world. And the world is turning more antisemitic and more hostile to Israel, as predicted in the Bible.

It date's back to ancient times when Jewish people started opening banks in the modern sense of the word. It was cosidered blasphemy in the eyes of Christianity and Catholicism to operate such a business.

Agreed. And, misunderstood history & misplaced grudges. Sometimes generational. It's really embarrassing because my grandparents seem to have some antisemitism in their bones from their interwar Hungarian childhoods. It sometimes comes out in random comments at the dinner table. I think it stems from the belief that Jews led the communists into Hungary, and my grandparents lost property under the communists. But, honestly, even if it were true, if I were Jewish back then I'd seriously consider joining the communists after the treatment I'd gotten under the fascists. As a gay guy I can identify with the way Jews have historically been scapegoated.

    To Swimguychicago,

I myself am of Roman descent, especially from my father's side. Which is a very interesting thing, as in ancient times, the Jews were oppressed by the Assyrians and the Babylonians, alongside the Philistines, the Amorites, Canaanites, Amalekites, the Hittites, and other nations, more powerful than Israel was in those days. Yet where are they now?

As for the Greeks, Romans and for that matter, the Egyptians - none of these have the culture, artistic skills or building commitments as their ancestors did, for example, Egyptian mummification of the dead had long ceased, as with their style of writing. Although the modern Greek language and letters of the alphabet are not much different to the ancient classical Greek. Yet Latin, the ancient Roman language, has long been dead, replaced by modern Italian.

Yet remarkably, not only the Jews have retained much of its Abrahamic bloodline, but its Hebrew language is identical to that of the original Old Testament, alongside its culture, currency (the Shekel, used in Biblical times) and the Judaism faith. For example, the Menorah, the seven-branch candlestick was first designed and used in the days of Moses (circa 1,600 BC). Today, if you walk in any city street in Israel, they are easy to find in the shops, awaiting sale. I bought one for myself when I was in Jerusalem in 1993. Yet the Jew as a distinct race had survived not only the holocaust and persecution from the Vatican, but through millennia of Diaspora (scattered around the globe, away from their homeland.)

Surely, the preservation of the Jew as a distinct and unique people must be by divine intervention, and not from Jupiter or Zeus either.

    To Jockfever,

Thankyou for such a supporting post.

Gypsies/Romani, who originally come from India, have also been "preserved" as a distinct and unique people. Apparently you're marveling at the idea that a group of people can maintain their own culture throughout the centuries. That's not proof of God at all.

I have wondered this as well. In fact I can remember the very first time it was brought to my attention that anti-antisemitism existed.

First of all however I want to say that I'm not racist, but this is going to be a racy post, so please don't start a whole flame war. Now onto the story...

I grew up in a pretty white area and went to a predominantly white high school. When I was in 9th grade at that high school I had an African American teacher. One day I was around after school and I caught the tail end of a discussion she was having with another student. The girl was also black and they were apparently having a discussion on race in America. I will never forget the wording of what she said. It went like this, "we are at the bottom of the social class along with the Jews, the only difference is that the Jews can conveniently not mention the fact that they are Jewish. But we can't hide who we are." She said this with the confidence and intelligence as though it was something that she'd discussed and thought about a lot and she felt was widely known.

I always wondered what she meant and sort of wanted to ask her, but I didn't dare ask. I have talked about this before with a few other (open minded, yet educated) people and they have given a few reasons, but none that I really felt made to much sense to justify the way the hate is portrayed.
