Im happy for their victory, but was this obnoxious display of triumphalism really necessary? The facial mugging and lording about. I had to cringe. Whatever happened to being magnanimous in victory?

I actually thought they were toned down in their victory compared to what I would have done.

This swimming race has been called the most exciting, closest in finished time, and, most intense rivalry in the history of the sport.

Recall, it was the team from France who talked trash about the team from the USA days beforehand. And, it was Michael Phelps who, before the medal ceremony, stepped off the podium and shook each of French teammates.

Team USA's behavior was befitting its victory. I was with a bunch of swim pals and we created a mild earthquake at our place at the finish of the race.

Any team sport reacts this way or more extreme given the stakes -- have you watched Basketball, Football or Baseball lately?

It was a bit over the top. Maybe they have been watching too many NFL football games!

It was a bit of an upset so I guess they should be given the benefit of the doubt. As long as this is not a harbinger of things to come.

I think the tension of that race is what gave impetus to those emotions. It was stunning how the American swimmer overcame such a large disadvantage. His achievement was awesome.

Perhaps the demonstrations of glee are not so great as is the desire to distract from the victory.

    Lest we forget...

... Look at that team streaming out onto the ice ... how gauche one might think...and the score was nowhere near close.

I think it used to be the joke in Canada:
How can the Canadian Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team hope to win?

    Play like girls.

Thats exactly how I looked at it. They really bit their tongues about the comments the French made prior to the race. It's a little odd when someone says they came to China for one thing and that was to beat the Americans. Not to mention also saying they'd "smash" them. So there is that moment when all that hot air goes down the toliet by just a finger tip so the team you trashed talked is going to finally let out some of that pent up energy and let it out with a happy dance, some yells, some fist pumping and flexing.

I was impressed with Phelps during the medal ceremony. Just prior to hearing the national anthem he got down off the podium and extended his hand to the entire French team. Very classy in my book. I'd have been more disappointed if they would have went to their childish level and said anything rude back during the smack talk. They didn't. They just focused on the race. So party it up for a few minutes guys you earned it. Definitely a race that will go down in the history books. It full on sucks living on the west coast though because we knew the results before it was actually ran here. Must have been awesome to see it live.

Yeah umm...they were quiet ALL before the race. The French team talked a ton of shit yet, they said NOTHING. They were even down during all of the race until the very end.

THEY. WON. A. FUCKING. GOLD. MEDAL. IN. THE. OLYMPICS.

I think any of us would celebrate the same way.

    Get off their dicks.

Seriously! I thought the point of competition was to ummm....

    BEAT OTHER PEOPLE. Lol.

What...were they supposed to not celebrate their win? Especially in such an AMAZING race.

I have to disagree on this one. The comeback by the Americans was spectacular and the expectations in this particular race were grand on all sides! This victory came out of nowhere and gives Phelps a chance at an Olympic/World record of Winning 8 ( I think) Gold medals at an Olympic games. These guys live and breathe for moments/victories like this. There whole life is spent training, eating and sleeping for these games. And when you realize you've just pulled off an amazing upset at a world class competition there is no way to (and no reason to) hold your emotions in check . The still photos of their response may look exaggerated but I assure you that that was the furthest thing from these guy's minds. And I'll even bet that these guys will cherish those photos as a reminder of that overwhelming joy that they felt at that priceless moment . Give em a break. Their triumph was awesome.

I didnt know that the French team had talked trash about the Americans and that they came to Beijing simply to beat the Americans.

Now I can see why the Americans exploded in such joy and exurberance.

Ok now my question is, for anyone but specifically to Babigaypimp, why is there no thread on the unsportsmanly conduct of the French team talking like that?

My fine foreign friends, this is one of y'all's behaviors that piss me off and tend to make me tune foreigners out. You are always there to criticize anything American. After a while, your carping gets so old that it just becomes environmental noise.

If I had won I'd take my speedo off and rub my genitals on everyone's head and scream "fuk u, fuk u, fuk u!"

HOwever, what I find obnoxious is the fact that Michael Phelps is ALWAYS surprised that he just won. Just like Rafael Nadal in tennis; I honestly think that these two pretend to be excited about winning because winning cannot be that surprising to them - seriously.

You have to remember that not only were they stunned last year, but that they completely smashed the previous record. I'd be pretty darn happy too.

The victory was stunning. The nearly impossible come-from-behind to beat a team that had goaded them was amazing. The victory was had by only 8/100 of a second. and was unexpected just seconds before that. The celebration was completely spontaneous and appropriate.

What's really obnoxious is this thread complaining about it.

P.S. Michael Phelps - what an amazing body. Just damn!

The Americans came back from behind to win the gold by .8 seconds. I would have been celebrating too! It is after all a competition!

I think Caslon is right on the mark here. If their behavior was inappropriate, it's hard for me to imagine what appropriate behavior would look like.

I usually scoff at the whole USA! USA! USA! bullshit -- particularly since this country isn't No. 1 in pretty much anything anymore, but...

... my understandig is that they were miserably behind and came back in remarkable fashion.

But they do look like idiots in those pics, though.

Are you serious? Its a competitive sport. Especially a relay event. That always gets the blood flowing. There at the Olympics. They were tame compared to what I would have done. What do you want them to do. Clap there hands and walk away?icon_rolleyes.gif

I agree with all the other sentiments regarding this thread probably except for ...boob? (5537B00B) icon_eek.gifanyway, despite the fact that phelps and nadal may be extraordinarily talented and great at what they do - there's always going to be someone better, so to respond in the way they do is fairly normal i would say. a kind of "holy crap, i'm still here" feeling
