It works for the director and producers because the first trilogy made a killing at the box office, and the licensing deals were lucrative as well. You're only fooling yourself if you think that anyone in Hollywood gives a shit about anything other than milking money from the gullible.

If you have actually read the book(s), then you know that there is so much mentioned about past wars, ...etc...that weren't brought out. Now they will be.

I'm actually just finishing up the book. I like to do that with books made into movies to see how true to the story they are.
I thought Jackson did a great job with the LOTR trilogy and he was able to do it without making it into 9 movies.

Glad you are reading The Hobbit. (You read the other books first?
Despite your "making it into 9 movies" dig, I believe you will find that The Hobbit eludes to a whole bounty of other stories that Jackson will be attempting to create on film. Hence, 'making it into 3 movies.'

thenes saidI was a bit worried when I first heard The Hobbit was becoming a trilogy. But the more I thought about it the more sense it made. Peter Jackson isn't just filming the book as a movie, he's filming all the unspoken, unwritten implied events that occur in this era before LotR that we only learn about in that later trilogy and its appendices.
I think he's proven he can be trusted with Tolkien's world, so I'm confident the three movies for The Hobbit will be awesome.
