[off topic] Did you see where that "helicopter" camera work following the fireworks going down the streets in Beijing was completely fake? It was a computer-generated animation feed by the Beijing Olympic Committee. Impressive. Still...

The prelims for Men's Gymnastics over the weekend. Alexander Artemev on pommel. The kid has a nice package, and a cute butt. Unfortunately, during the finals last night they seemed to shoot him from behind, so you didn't get any great views of his front. I have seen a team shot where it's there in its glory. Meanwhile, I found this pic of him on Flickr. Gymnast bodies... SIGH...

Wait, I think this is the video from the weekend:

I suspect he is angry because someone dared to point out the fact that some aspects of the opening ceremonies were faked in the interest of making everything over the top in an asthetic sense.

And this may also be a little off topic here but....

I will now have to play Devil's advocate by also pointing out the story that broke recently about He Kexin, the Chinese gold medalist in gymnastics, who is about to be stripped of her medals because of a Chinese government cover up of almost insurmountable evidence that she is in fact almost 2 years under age by IOC standards to compete in this year's competition. This was apparently done for the simple reason that she is better than the athletes who are currently of the regulation age.

Having lived there for 5 years, I know just how typical this type of behavior is on their part. It's all about something they like to call 'saving face'. I often wondered about this since it would seem that the truth would be more likely to achieve thisicon_confused.gif

If you are trying to mock the regulation age athletes and say that He Kexin is better than they are and deserves the medals, it is not the case that she has acquired greater skill than the older athletes. At her age, the female body is able to do exercises that it can't do as it matures. So it is unfair to have a younger girl compete against older ones. They physiological aren't the same.

I am not mocking anyone here. It is the Chinese who are making a mockery of fair play in sport. When I said that she was 'better' than the athletes of proper age, I was simply citing their own reasoning, however dubious it is. I think its incredibly unfair not only to the athletes who had to compete against her (who all were presumably of age), but also to the athletes on the Chinese side who are of the proper age who were not given the chance to compete because their government was so bent on stacking the odds. Not to mention He Kexin herself who now must face the shame and psychological ramifications that I can only imagine will come with being stripped of her medals. She is just a child who was doing as she was told.

This is really off topic here so I have started another thread that this discussion would be more suited for.

And back on topic, I dig the photo of the embrace between the gymnasts. The way they hold eachother in this shot looks like they must care for eachother very much. Very nice to seeicon_smile.gif
