Does even pass the common sense test. Obama team shooting itself in the foot again.

Obama’s sleaziest ad yet: Romney kinda sorta killed a man’s wife by closing down his steel plant

Please, spare me the objection that this comes from The One’s Super PAC, not his formal campaign, and therefore it’s technically not an “Obama ad.” That excuse never flew for Romney when his own Super PAC was carpet-bombing Gingrich and Santorum in the primaries. The wall of separation between a campaign and its PAC is all but invisible to the naked eye. If you think it’s easy for the White House to get Harry Reid to smear Romney over his tax returns, imagine how easy it must be for them to get former White House spokesman and current Priorities USA honcho Bill Burton to fling feces like this.

They won’t attack him for being Mormon (I hope), so calling him a murderer will have to do:

The pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action lobbed a heavy-duty attack at Mitt Romney this morning, airing an ad that links the closure of a GST Steel plant in Kansas City to the loss of a family’s health insurance — and the death of a woman some time later…

In the case of this particularly jarring super PAC ad, it may also be relevant that Soptic’s wife died in 2006, years after the GST factory closed down…

I asked Priorities USA strategist Bill Burton to explain the connection between Romney, Bain and a cancer fatality that happened near the end of Romney’s tenure as governor of Massachusetts. The lapse in time between the plant closing and Soptic’s death doesn’t mean the ad is invalid, but it raises questions about the cause and effect relationship here.

“We’re illustrating how long it took for communities and individuals to recover from the closing of these businesses,” Burton responded. “Families and individuals had to find new jobs, new sources of health insurance and a way to make up for the pensions they lost. Mitt Romney has had an enduring impact on the lives of thousands of men and women and for many of them, that impact has been devastating.”

Romney stopped doing work for Bain in 1999; the steel plant in question here closed down in 2001; Soptic’s wife passed away in 2006; and yet, Romney’s somehow culpable. Perfection. You know what’s really interesting about this spot? It’s not even a health-care ad. It’d be sleazy under any circumstances, but there’d at least be a concrete policy angle if Burton was selling it as an argument for, say, single-payer, to decouple insurance from employment. He’s not. There appears to be no actual policy argument here at all, unless The One now opposes layoffs on principle, for fear that someone somewhere might be left without insurance. Is that where our very pro-business president — seriously, just ask him — is now at? As John Sexton says, does this mean O himself is on the hook until 2014 for any deaths that resulted from GM dealerships being closed in 2009? I thought workers bore some responsibility to find a new job with insurance after they’re laid off, but if he wants to take the blame for human tragedies at Government Motors, fine by me.

I have to say, though, it’s a comfort to me to know that Hopenchange will be well and truly shattered come November, no matter what happens on election day. Even if he pulls it out, after a campaign like this the idea that he and his team represent some sort of new, more exalted form of politics will be fully exposed for the joke that it is. His second term won’t be better, but at least people won’t be kidding themselves anymore, if any still are. There’s some small consolation in that.

By the way, this isn't the first time Obama's team grossly lied about GST Steel. Review the following thread to see the facts not only completely discredit the Obama team, but show the exact opposite of what they intended.

Can't wait to be rid of all the Chicago thugs.

Ad links Romney to death of steelworker's wife, campaign decries 'contemptible effort'

In one of the toughest attacks of the 2012 campaign, a pro-Obama super PAC released a battleground ad Tuesday that attempts to link Mitt Romney to the death of a former Kansas City steelworker's wife.

Romney's campaign responded harshly, calling the ad a "contemptible effort" to conceal President Obama's economic record.

But the ad marks a steady escalation in recent weeks in the charges being flung by both sides -- particularly by the super PACs, which are not technically an organ of the campaigns.

The Priorities USA ad focuses on the story of Joe Soptic, a former worker at GST Steel. He was among those affected when the firm declared bankruptcy in 2001, following the takeover by Romney's Bain Capital firm and other companies.

"I don't think Mitt Romney understands what he's done to people's lives by closing the plant," Soptic said in the ad. He recalled how when "Mitt Romney and Bain" closed the plant, his family lost their health care.

"A short time after that, my wife became ill. I don't know how long she was sick. And I think maybe she didn't say anything because she knew we couldn't afford the insurance," he said.

Soptic said that one day he took her to the hospital, where doctors found she had Stage 4 cancer.

"There was nothing they could do for her. And she passed away in 22 days," he said. "I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he's done to anyone, and furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned."

The ad condenses a series of events that took place over several years, and Romney's ties to the situation are not clear.

Before the GST Steel closure, Romney left Bain in 1999 to work on the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah. There have been ongoing disputes about his involvement with Bain during that period, since he was still listed as CEO in financial documents, but the campaign has maintained he effectively left the company in 1999.

Further, Soptic's wife died in 2006, according to a Kansas City Star article from the time. This would have been several years after the plant closed down, several years after Romney left Bain and as Romney was finishing his term as Massachusetts governor.

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams rejected the premise of the ad in a written statement Tuesday.

"President Obama's allies continue to use discredited and dishonest attacks in a contemptible effort to conceal the administration's deplorable economic record. After 42 months of unemployment above 8 percent, it is clear that the president and his campaign do not have a rationale for reelection," he said.

Asked about the ad in an interview with Fox News, Romney said Tuesday he hadn't had a chance to see it and couldn't comment. He said he's come to expect almost anything from Obama's team.

I sympathize for the guy in the Ad. But the ad is just the tip of the Iceberg.

The plant was closed in 2001, Romney left in 1999 for the Olympics. So what gives?

Hey Harry Reid threw out baseless accusations on the Senate floor. This is not even anything close to that.

So it seems anything goes these .

I love how the conservatives push for new lows in campaign attack ads and general lies and mendacity but whine and cry when a liberal fights fire with fire.

    Suck it up, girls! icon_lol.gif

I wonder if that ad will continue to play. The timing of the Steelworkers claims just do not make sense.

Especially since the campaign embraced ad by having the star of the ad on a telephone press conference in May( no excuse now that its a PAC AD).
It seems like a tactical misstep. Even the TIMES writes about it.
