My wrists hurt after doing bumps.

    Does anyone have tips on proper bumping technique? My forearms always end up getting really beat up whenever I play, which isn't often...

    Could that be it? Is it just something that develops with time?

    Any advice would be great icon_biggrin.gif.

    When I haven't player recently, my forearms will be sore after an evening of volleyball. Playing once a week, that goes away by week 3 or so.

    As for bumping technique, there are two main methods. One involves the palms effectively both facing upward, one on top of the other. The other involves one hand making a fist and the other cupping it from the side. The first technique has the advantage of potentially providing a flatter surface for the bumping platform, as you're using the undersides of your forearms instead of the sides, so many find it easier to control a pass that way. I favor the second approach, in large part because my elbows easily hyperextend and I'm far more likely to get hurt with the first technique than the second. Also, while the surface of each arm is flatter in the first method, the two arms are not at equal heights, so you need to approach the ball from an angle to compensate for that.

    It could be that the ball is too hard, and not your bumping technique. Last year there were a few nights when the volleyball was too hard and any bump would make me cringe.

    Generally when you bump, you should have your knees bent, your arms extended and straight, and the ball should preferably hit the flat bottom of your wrist (not the side or the top). You know you have made a good bump when the ball goes towards the guy who is setting with good height and low velocity.

    You can now volley when receiving serves, you don't have to always bump. That may take away some of the strain on your wrists.

    You will eventually develop toughness/resistance on your forearms as you play more and more. when i first started at 13, my forearms were red for days, but that faded quickly after a month of regular playing time.

    good advice so far. make sure to keep your platform/arms straight, that provides a solid "plank" for the ball to bounce off of. ideally, the best spot to pass/bump with is the area between your wrist and pronator/supinator muscles.

    how is the adjustment thus far?

    If you play more they won't hurt. Eveyone's hurt when the first start out or haven't played in a long time. Ice after will help. Keep playing!! It's a great game. Try to make contact on the forearm. Straight elbows!!

    Good advice from all of you!
    I play 3 or 4 times/week and don't have that problem.
    It seemed to only be the first few days of learning.

    two things to consider. the ball might be crappy. if so, i would suggest playing with another ball. it could be that it has too much air or too much air, or possibly its not broken in yet.

    another is simply building a tolerance over time, like a callis.....if thats even how its spelled...egh i dont know.
