I am very pleased to welcome Mr Billy Cann, leader of the Island Party of Prince Edward Island, as a new member of the New Democratic Party of PEI.

Sometimes one has to sample every dish before one finds the one that is most palatable.
Though I have been a New Democrat since 1985, I, too, came from another party that once inspired but (I felt) failed to live up to its promise. The New Democrats will not insult the the sincerity of a convert, but will help newcomers fully understand and embrace fully our commitment to transparency, Responsibility and Fairness. People who join the NDP are o embracing change from the status quo; but Islanders need not fear newcomers changing the NDP into the status quo.

Mr Cann was formerly a member of the governing Liberal Party but left the Party to form his own protest party with a group of similarly disaffected Liberals.

He did not get elected in 2011. ( never say lost" - we just "don't get elected) LOL

He will be sharply criticized by the public as an opportunist for having belonged to three parties in as many years.

But he approached us to become a New Democrat. For months now I have been sounding a clarion call using my public and media appearances for all Islanders to compare their core values to ours - if they are the same we welcome you to help us change things. and bring things out into the open.

As a mermber of our team, now - he is one of our assets, and it is a very welcome part of my role to stand with him publicly during the shitstorm that has just erupted.

I might adopt one of his planks and put it into my health roadmap.

It was an idea he first floated last October.

Cann says building a party takes too long and he wants to impact Island politics now.

"It's hard to start a party like that, as I found out, with very few resources and very little support. It'd be a long road so I thought this would be the fastest way to change things in P.E.I.," Cann said.

The Island Party failed to win any seats in the 2011 election.

Cann says he doesn't know what will happen to his old party, but he wishes them well.

As to other members of the Island Party:

the Island Party is constituted as an entity; they could elect a new leader. Uniting the PARTIES is not a consideration, so it will be each individual's choice what to do.

It must have been a shock when their leader told them he was joining the NDP

There has never been an Independant elected here- only Liberals, then PCs in alternation except for one year a New Democrat was elected. He sat in the back and was "the conscience of the House."

She's just glad she's no one else but her. icon_rolleyes.gif

(breathlessly): "But it's Anne with an E, you see, because without it, it's just so plain, don't you think?"

By the by - the musical (of course) still runs here (It is the longest running musical in Canada). A few years ago, the producers launched Anne & Gilbert (the sequel) which ran for several years.

It has just been licensed for several productions in the U.S.A. So keep an eye out for it.

It is pure nostalgia and saccharine but families like it.
