Student Scores Improve If Teachers Given Incentives Upfront

A bonus payment to teachers can improve student academic performance -- but only when it is given upfront, on the condition that part of the money must be returned if student performance fails to improve, research at the University of Chicago shows.

When I was a little kid and all through I think maybe even high school, Mom used to pay me

    $10 for As
    $5 for Bs

    nothing for Cs

Our signed contract included that I'd have to pay back

    $5 for Ds &
    $10s for Fs.

At report card time I always made out very well. Thanx, Mom, you were not only the best, but 50 years before your time.
