The film opens next Friday and will be the late Whitney Houston's last time on screen as an actress. The story revolves around three sisters (Sparkle, Sister, and Delores) who form a girl group in the 1960's in Harlem, New York.

Musical prodigy Sparkle (Jordin Sparks) struggles to become a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart. From an affluent Detroit area and daughter to a single mother (Whitney Houston), she tries to balance a new romance with music manager, Stix (Derek Luke), while dealing with the unexpected challenges her new life will bring as she and her two sisters Sister (Carmen Ejogo) and Dolores (Tika Sumpter) strive to become a singing group during the Motown era. In the meantime, Sister begins an affair with abusive, treacherous drug lord, Satin (Mike Epps).

The late singer and promising actress Aaliyah was cast as Sparkle by Whitney Houston herself but passed away a few months later in 2001. The film was shelved for ten years after Houston had no interest in partaking in the project after Aaliyah's tragic death. However, in 2011 Whitney agreed to star in the film after being convinced once more by producer Debra Martin Chase.

For the fans of Whitney Houston will any of you guys be seeing this film? I will be going with my mother who insisted that we go see it together.

Below you can view the trailer for the film and Aaliyah's cover of the film's climax song "Giving Up" a powerful ballard i believe would have won her an Academy Award and other awards. RIP

Oh What a Smoker! This is true to the vein of Donny Hathaway's 1971 version. Listening to Gladys Knight's original from 1964, Aaliyah gives her godmother a run for the money.

I so agree!!! There was so much versatility about Aaliyah that made me more attracted to her as a person and artist. I never heard her sing so powerful like she does on this track because she usually had a calm and soft spoken voice due to her label holding her back in my opinion. She did Donny Hathaway justice with her cover just like her other remakes with The Isley Brothers and Pattie Labelle (At Your Best, Choosey Lover, If You Only Knew)

The film came down here to my hometown a day early yesterday and I went and saw it with my mother. I thought that it was pretty good although not as good as the original 1976 film it held it's own. Whitney Houston gives her best and admirable performance in this film and I only paid attention to her. Everyone else involved did okay in their roles. Jordin Sparks is a much better singer than actress IMO but out of the three sisters i was more impressed by Sister and the actress that played her. Aaliyah was definitly onmy mind while watching this film, the songs that played, When Jordin's character sang at the ending. I said to myself Aaliyah would have did the part even better. Whitney even wanted the film to be dedicated to her to acknowledge the fact that she was the first choice and lead to be in the movie. icon_razz.gif

I think that it is a great film that many fans of both Whitney and Aaliyah will enjoy. Sparkle is now in theaters!!!

This was taped last night. I think the actress that played Sister did the role justice

This song certainly has stood the test of time, I remember seeing "Sparkle" in the 70s. I've heard this song for decades, but didn't En Vogue cover it in the 90s?

I'm just waiting for now a remake of "Cooley High" !
