The thread title is one of the most incorrect statements in human history.

The internet has made more millionaires than any other social medium ever created. If the internet failed, most of the world's economy would also fail. It's a necessary component of national and international trade.

The internet has brought the world closer together than any other social medium ever created (think 'international penpals' before the internet). Before the internet, most of us only had family and friends. Now most of us can travel anywhere in the world and meet people we've already met online. I'm a prime example of this, since I've met many RJ'ers (and folks from other sites) that I've corresponded with long before traveling to those areas.

So, next time you want to say the internet should not be taken seriously, remember that the internet has brought the world closer than it's ever been. I can literally travel anywhere in the world and know/meet someone I've already corresponded with. Before the internet, this would not have been possible.

My nephew's father was our family's taxidermist. I always looked forward to deer season, cause he'd make some really awesome "displays" out of our kill for the year. icon_lol.gif

Unfortunately, digital cameras were not readily available back then. Otherwise I could post some really stupidly funny pictures that would say "yes" to your question. icon_lol.gif

I love how this thread is now about taxidermy. icon_lol.gif

ok ok I'll get back on topic.

The internet has revolutionized the world. The internet is serious business. I think that when people say, "the internet is not serious business" they are usually referring to when people rage or act stupid.

I think it would be funny to see some of the internet trolls get taxidermied with their "serious" faces exposed.

So was this thread inspired by the recent events that have transpired on this site?

People who act abusively are the ones that dismiss their own actions. It's a poor attempt to not take accountability for one's actions.
Half and half. Yes and no.

It's something I've wanted to say for a long time, but recent events have brought it closer to home. This was the perfect time for publication of my original thoughts. icon_biggrin.gif

I too get upset when this is said, not only what Paul mentioned, but also, when guys complain (younger guys anyway), that all the hot men are so far away; having no concept of time when you didn't know there were this many like minded men.
I would have killed to talk to even one, caring less that he was on the other side of the planet, only that I wasn't alone.

The internet has become an integral part of just about every aspect of our lives. It's a double-edged sword. In some ways, it's good and others not so good, but it has definitely changed our culture in ways that we cannot go back. This is a very interesting topic.

    OMG yes. Absolutely.
Electronic communication is truly miraculous compared with what I was used to.

A net gain for society.....? Questionable.

There are gains, probably things you don't even realize because there are conveniences and efficiencies we all take for granted because the are part of everyday business.

There are always losses, too. It's the price of change. There was a time many of us laughed at the prospect of a cell phone. Yet if even for basic safety concerns, most of us wouldn't go back. Better or worse it's where we are.

I understand what you are trying to say but something tells me that someone way back must have said the same at the beginning of the industrial revolution.

I think history will remember the coming of the internet as a massive revolution in personal communications, information sharing, commerce and the acquisition of knowledge. I think it is as important as the Industrial Revolution.
