Back from Orlando Sunday afternoon, met some RJers, gay resort review

We did a quick weekend trip up to Orlando Friday (8-10) for a SMART Ride meeting on Saturday. Arranged online to have dinner after we arrived, with a lovely RJ couple we hadn't met before. (I'm not naming names unless they chose to identify themselves, don't want them to become targets for my stalkers here)

Then Saturday after our working meeting we had a little evening mixer at a local pub, and another RJ member unexpectedly introduced himself. He recognized me from my pic and brimmed hat I was wearing. That was a real shocker, but very welcome. icon_biggrin.gif

Regrettably another RJer I had hoped to meet had a last minute conflict. Maybe next time, or if he comes down here.

Some travel advice: we stayed at the Parliament House gay resort, for several reasons. First, it was just a half mile from our meeting location, and I didn't want to have to fight Orlando traffic. Second, it was relatively cheap. Third, my husband used to go there frequently 20 years ago, and was curious to see the changes.

Verdict: out of a full -=ART=DECO=- rating, Parliament House gets: -=A.

Grungy, smelly rooms, shabby bars and dance floors, so-so live indoor stage. Good hotel desk staff, OK but claustrophobic restaurant, a couple of fair bartenders, but the rest of the staff have attitude. Their focus is on the bar crowd, not the hotel operation. Loud music until 3 AM that permeates your room. I hate to use the term, but if there is such a thing as gay trailer trash, the Parliament House is where they hang out. Not recommended.

I went to the bar at the Parliament House when I was in Orlando for the Capital One Bowl and Disney World. The place isn't supposed to be a five star resort, it's supposed to be a sleazy motel. If you look at their photos online you know what it is before going. I had a decent time at the bar, but I stayed at the Rosen Centre Hotel, which I really liked - especially for $55 a night on Hotwire.

I'm going to use a worn-out catchphrase when it comes to the Parliament House....

    "It is what it is...."

It would be great to see a band new Parliament House (PH2 is what I'll call it) built somewhere in Orlando. The problem is the cost of land and it could be a bit of a kerfuffle between the owners and Orange County as far as where to locate it. Better bet would be within the more open-minded City of Orlando where the support would be greater from the City Council (although the County Commission may have to give final approval).

The smarter and better choice would be to close the whole thing down and raze the hotel and restaurant/disco/bar areas and build from scratch. As you saw, that neighborhood is overdue for some "attention" and a new PH complex could be the forerunner of a gentrification project on Orange Blossom Trail between Colonial Drive and Central Blvd.

I have been going to the PH since 1979 and it is not the best place in town, but it's a legend...such as it is (and looks).

Here's a "would you believe" bit of trivia for you: About one mile to the north of the PH and on the north side of Colonial Drive is a long-established, "old Orlando money" neighborhood, Orlando Country Club Estates.

Your review of the place is honest and truthful and I am sure that some of our gay movers and shakers here know that and my idea above may have already been talked about.

Regardless, I hope both of you enjoyed your stay in our city and plan to come back often!!
