Now that I am well over 3,000 forum posts (watch your butt Sedative, I am gaining), I thought I would put down a few personality traits that I have found useful in maintaining a sense of humour and fun.

- a skin so thick it would make a rhinoceros proud;

- a love of cats;

- not easily surprised or shocked by what some RJ members finding interesting (I did not realize how fascinating some gay men found bowel movements before I joined RJ);

- an ability to tolerate english-speaking/writing people butchering their mother tongue in every possible way;

- a willingness to accept that some Americans do not travel much outside their country;

- the unintentional insults of young RJ gay members towards RJ members over 30;

- an ability to bite one's tongue and turn to another website instead of engaging in flaming;

- a fascination with gay people no matter political stripes, sizes, shapes and backgrounds;

- a love of learning and a curiousity about how other's see the world around them;

- a willingness to help other's who have questions regardless of how silly you think the question was initially, after all we were all innocent and ignorant at one time.

That is all for now, other RJ members feel free to add some I missed. Hopefully I will get to 10,000 one day with most of these traits intact.

- say DOWN WITH RELIGION! icon_twisted.gif... then apologize for it. icon_wink.gif

- If you are tempted to post just to flame someone whose post made you angry, type it anyway, then discard it.

- Never pass up a chance to compliment someone. If it makes them feel good, you'll feel good. Unless it's one of those guys who thinks compliments are invitations to sex and cohabitation icon_lol.gif and then just shrug and say 'oh well, I thought he was different'

- learn to skip posts of people who annoy you.

- some people will never understand reason... and big words... resist the impulse to try and fill a vessel already broken.icon_razz.gif

Wise advice, wish I was smart enough to take that advice and could manage to be less of a jack-ass.

You do seem to be repeatedly troubled by that, I've noticed.

Pretend you can understand someone's take on bisexuality - even if they say they've had a boyfriend for more than 5 years but still identify as bisexual.

I would state things a little different than Surreal here.. for me cats and a few of the other points are probably not the first things I would focus on. Some basics:

1. Always approach others with a sense of flexiblity, you are bound to disagree with others at some point.

2. Treat all others with respect, no matter what their age, background or experience

3. Always approach all in a somewhat lighthearted vein

4. If you get upset by a post or thread, or personality, there are more important things to vent about in your life. You can defend yourself and disagree without getting ugly or personal.

Certainly suggestions made by all here are worth considering. I hope it can help to make RJ forums a better place.

To maintain sanity always wait until afer you drank a lot of wine at dinner, or booze at the watering hole, before you log on. Then everybody and everything seems soo freakin funny and amazingly you realize that this is a web site, in a big internet world, in a big country, in a big world, in a big universe.

Puts this in perspective....

Forget About It

http://www.romola-garai.com/mp3s/Allison Krauss - Forget About It.mp3

Forget about

... How there can be gay men with right wingnut ideals
... People write with tinfoil teeth clenching grammar
... How religion destroys people
... People make you laugh when they try to be rude

But all in all it's still fun

Right guys? icon_wink.gif

I think that's great advice for maintaining sanity (and respect for others) in the world well beyond just the RJ forums.

Dont worry. jp seems to live in a sad, lonesome world and he occasionally bitterly lashes out.
