I received this message today: "As of 9/30/2012 your cell phone will no longer work. You need a new phone and SIM to keep your current wireless service. Go to any provider store to receive a free replacement phone."

I called to verify and was told that they were discontinuing the service tower frequency on which my cell phone operates.

Hell, I've only had this phone for 12 years - I thought they were good forever. icon_eek.gif

12 years? icon_eek.gif They have to update the technology sometime. If you're getting a free replacement, what's the problem? You'll probably be able to keep the same number, so all you have to do is go in and get your free replacement. Sounds pretty good to me!

I figured it was one of those things with a crank, and that gets you to Maybel the switchboard operator.

Jot down your contacts. Chances are, they won't be able to transfer them to the new phone.

That happened to me last time I switched phones in January.

After twelve years with the same phone he should be given a top-of-the line android/iPhone with news coverage documenting the transfer.

Change can be difficult. But sometimes (usually) it is for the better. Besides, with a modern phone you can text me and send me more pics of your awesomeness!

Try to put aside your anxiety about the new phone and look for the positive things. A new phone will cause you to learn something you didn't know before (principally, how to use the darn thing). Embrace the future. If that is too much for you to accept, then let's start with something a little more palatable by accepting the present.

As much as some of us who are old enough to have a distant past wish we could stay in the past with simpler things, we are part of something greater. We can experience joy and satisfaction within ourselves by taking part in life every day rather than trying to relive the life we used to have.

You'll be fine, and in a couple of weeks you'll be telling us all the cool things you can do with your new gizmo!

Good luck and let us know how you do with the new technology!
