We have the highest fuel prices in the world and now petrol and diesel is being stolen from people's cars, lorries and vans. People are also driving away from garage forecourts without paying.

And the thieves store the oil in lock-ups and garages, very dangerous as leaking vapour could cause a big explosion.

There have been stories here in the US showing people parking over the tank fill-up lids at gas stations with big trailers and stealing the gas from the underground tanks. The one story I read said people made off with over 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel in a matter of like 15 minutes without anyone noticing.

Yea, that's been happening here in SC.

There's another scam involving the satellite dishe that a gas station uses to communicate with credit card verifying services. The thieves cover the feedhorn with a little aluminum foil to disrupt the communication link. This forces the gas station to accept credit cards without verifying them, so the thieves can use stolen credit cards to buy gas.

All the more reason to not buy a SUV or truck unless you really need one. It's much more difficult to steal gas from underneath a car. A high vehicle...pretty simple.

Plus small cars tend to have smaller tanks. Therefore the return on "investment" is much lower when you steal gas from a small car.

I bet most of the people stealing gas out of gas tanks are gay men; only we have the needed suction power to get the flow started through the siphon hose.

Tape razor blades to the cap. Just remember they're there when you fill up.

I work at a grocery store, and we have a gas station at our location as well. Our store used to let you pump then pay but we got 2-3 people driving off a week cause we are on a busy street with easy access out so we had to go to all pre-pay on our pumps, we've also put combo locks on the lids of the underground tanks so people cant steal from the tanks. I've heard about the foil trick to, good thing the ladder is locked off with a cover to the roof.

I don't want to be too smart, but we pay about three times as much for gasoline here in Europe compared to the USA. You guys are the lucky ones. I wish we would have your prices.

What is this supposed to do? Deter thieves? Then I'd have to go through the cumbersome process of trying to remove the blades every time I want to fill up my tank?

Or attach bear-traps under your car some sort of way. That'll teach their asses.

I remember gas theft in the 70's. I was very young and didn't understand it but I remember people using siphoning hoses and walking from car to car stealing gas. I was barely 8 years old. They were so brazen to do it in front of me without any apparent apprehension of fear.
