Is there any hope that people will actually get their heads out of their asses or not?

Cant really blame this gen since the older one didn't really do a good job at teaching us their mistakes. But yeah, Kids are pretty stupid these days icon_biggrin.gif.

Exactly. The folly of youth that is also its beauty is that you fail and learn from it. If you are simply imparted with knowledge without experience, you'd likely live a rather boring life.

I don't think kids are geting dumber. I think they are starting to lack basic common sense. Sure - they're smarter but they are also expecting a lot more be handed to them.

We're fucked, but not necessarily of our own accord. Rich kids of instagram are but a tiny tiny privileged segment of the population, and it's not even really their fault. It's mommy and daddy's fault.

Despite my dad protesting that I need to just "buckle down" and earn more money (since he already had bought a house and married at my age, as well as paying off his college tuition of $2,000) I'm doing OK.

The recent social and economic events will be shaping our generation to be possibly the next great generation. I'm talking a return to the basics and away from a superfluous all-consuming lifestyle of our parent's generation - think smaller houses and living spaces, less cars and more walking and driving, a greater focus on environmentalism, sustainability, city planning and interpersonal connections. I think that we are starting to break free of the traditional constraints of many systems - newspapers, book publishing, music sharing, advertising - and instead use the internet for our news, free ebooks for our publishing, make our own music and covers published on Youtube and in local music communities, and choose our companies based more on ethics and moral responsibility of the company.

We already have a reputation for putting personal life and family life ahead of work life, as well as seeking excellence and multitasking at work. I believe it is this balance that will allow us to achieve a hopefully more ethical and sustainable way of living for ourselves, our communities, our environment, and the world. We also do not see race as divisive as an issue as our parents. We are less likely to have an issue with GLBTQ marriage and rights. We have grown up alongside people of all backgrounds, and have the ability to learn, share, and communicate with people around the world.

I think we're going to be just fine so long as the current generation in power doesn't fuck things up royally. Which is possible, given the current sad state of affairs in Congress, the rearing of the crazy religious right, a complete loss and/or lack of basic education, and that nobody appears to be able to assess research or facts for themselves anymore. Sometimes I just feel like hunkering down and keeping quite so I can survive the craziest generation (as in bat-shit crazy) learn from their mistakes, and then get ready to clean up their shit.

Yes, it's called time. Every new generation that comes up is much maligned by those who came before them. It's a ridiculous game people play as they age to make themselves feel more important or accomplished. I can't think of a single generation that hasn't ultimately been successful or adapted well enough to not become a liability.

Of course! Don't think just because someone had their "perfect" version of life growing up generations ago, that somehow you, and your generation, can't find your way through this world! Accept the broken world you live in, then find your place in it, and do whatever you can to help it. Ease your own conscious, help those you care about, believe what you feel is Right, and make waves/ripples in your world. I'll tell you, the people you admire the most on this site may have come from situations and pasts that would wreck your mind and imagination to imagine yourself in. They'll tell you it is difficult, but it is possible, and with that, I say its necessary. Have some compassion for your wild, eccentric and trail blazing generation! Change the world by changing how you see yourselves while you're still young! Don't lose heart! icon_cool.gif

Yeah, who's worried about our generation? We haven't even had time to screw up yet--much more worrisome are the baby boomers in positions of power and responsibility.

Immaturity, entitlement, lack of integrity and character, yada, yada, yada,... What models of better character do we/they have to aspire to? Who are our/their heroes? Lady Gaga? Justin Bieber? the Kardashians?

I presume you mean "teaching us to learn from their mistakes.."

Why would you want to be taught their mistakes?icon_confused.gif

Besides...you won't listen. You think you know it all already.

    short answer: yes

long answer: the question itself is myopic.

every generation asks that question and every generation has a small set of the population that refuses to let the world cave in on itself. NOT ON THEIR WATCH!

every war is the worst we've ever seen, every natural disaster the worst we've ever endured, and every heartbreak the worst we've ever felt. we live, it sucks, we adapt, we grow.

every generation has a handful of idealogues, martyrs, and quintessentially human leaders who inspire us all to be better and, somehow, we get better.

the children of twitter and iEverything will be fine, just as we as a species have always been fine. we just need a stern talking-to before one of the wackos gets real power and we have a repeat of the 1930s.

I have hope for the future, because my generation is a lot more open-minded, tolerant and accepting than previous generations.

we just have to wait for all the douchebag selfish baby boomers to die off, then things will be better when we are able to take control.
