Ok, so this is more of a blog than a forum topic. I felt that had to share this with you all...at least the ones who are actually reading this.
Yesterday I celebrated two very special birthdays! First one was (of course) the birthday of my romantic partner of five years (who turned 41) and the second was the birthday of one of my favorite and celebrated chefs of all time—Julia Child. Yes, Julia Child! If Julia were still alive, she would have been one-hundred years young!
So in honor of both birthdays, I prepared for my loving and devoted partner a three-course meal which came from Julia’s cookbook—I’m sure you are all aware of its existence—Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The menu consist of Soupe a L’oignon (Onion soup), Supremes de Volaille aux Champignons (Chicken breasts with Mushrooms in a Port cream sauce), and a Tarte aux Fraises (Strawberry Tart) which consisted of three parts—the sugar crust, the crème saint-honore (custard filling with egg whites), and the red currant sugar glaze—that were all made from scratch. The only things that didn’t come from the book were the side dishes—the SteamFresh Italian green beans (which I didn’t care for) and the Uncle Ben’s brown rice and quinoa blend with garlic.
The meal was a rousing success! He was very appreciative of his birthday dinner. After such a meal, we were so bloated that we didn’t much of anything else except sleep. I got to burn off this meal at the gym today!
Of course no successful dinner could be without the perfect wine. The wine I selected was a 2010 Chardonnay from Jacob’s Creek. I was very proud of myself and pleased that everything turned out great…not one single foul up. I have plenty of dishes to do today!

Sounds awesome indeed! Glad you made the effort and I'm sure your bf does as well. Part of what makes life special is the extra effort, like what you showed here.... great! Keep it up and glad you guys had a great time.

He does put a lot of effort, a lot more than I do at times. We did have a great time. It was like Thanksgiving all over again...icon_biggrin.gif

The birthday dinner sounded delicious. I am sure what made it even more special is that you prepared everything and made your man feel "special". It is very heartwarming to read about these wonderful gestures. Keep up the great work!

Sounds like a great dinner, and a great tribute to him. I grew up on Julia Child, have all her cookbooks, and used to cook that way a lot. These days, I generally take my partner out to dinner on his Bday, let him cook most nights, and save fancy cooking for desserts and guests - less mess in the kitchen - I can't do a major production without making a mess. If I tried cooking every night like the woman in the Julia movie, we would probably be divorced by now.
