Memo to creepy closet-cases who abuse their positions of power to witch-hunt gay college kids:

There are these things called consequences.

A jury today said that former Michigan assistant district attorney Andrew Shirvell must pay Chris Armstrong $4.5 million for 2010 blog posts that attacked Armstrong and his alleged "homosexual agenda" during Armstrong's tenure as student body president for University of Michigan.

WOW! I knew this was going to court. Shirvell can now go back to flipping burgers seeing as his law education cant be used for any state now. not with a debt (court mandated) at this level!

This is awesome news but, sadly, I seriously doubt Andrew Shirvell will ever have to pay a dime. Regardless, he learned a really important lesson the hard way, and that in itself is justice served.

Because he probably doesn't have a pot to piss in, so getting money from the guy will be problematic to say the least. Trust me, I hope they hound him and garnish his wages every day of his life. This is one horrible man and he deserves everything he's getting.

Unfortunately there are also these things called appeals, which could overturn this jury decision, or greatly reduce the damages awarded. And certainly drag out a final resolution for years, as this original lawsuit has taken 3 years so far.

And even if the amount is confirmed, I don't think Shirvell has the money. Has this gone before the State Bar yet, and can he still practice law? And has Shirvell ever been criminally charged for this, especially for stalking & harassment?

Conservative media are making this a freedom of speech issue. Right Wingers think defaming people for being gay is one of their Constitutional rights. Whereas defending ourselves against Right Wing groups is not one of ours.

wow. A guy who was in that position with no assets yet (not even a house) but yeah - even in canada we cannot do more than put a lien on a property should they sell it - and it is often part-owned by a spouse and untouchable. But you'd expect he's have managed to acquire a few investments he hasn't been able to shelter.

Although he has had a lot of time to shelter assets to prepare for this inevitable loss.

Even if his legal career is over - he will probably still find a patronage appt within the tea party or one of the Hate-listed organizations that abound.

Or a Fox News commentator, and/or become a conservative radio talk show host on a Clear Channel station. Nothing like being a martyr for the anti-gay cause to bring in the Right Wing audience. icon_razz.gif

The only bright side would be if Armstrong was still entitled to some monetary damages following appeals, and Shirvell's new media career provided the money.

I haven't actually seen this approach taken by the Conservative media -- but maybe I missed it. Regardless, Andrew Shirvell crossed a line way beyond what could just be considered "Freedom of Speech" and clearly a court ruled accordingly. Consequently, Shirvell is now paying the price that is justly deserved.

I prefer the wording of this to what I was going to say, which is simply:

    OWNED!

You can't say whether or not he has a pot to piss in, so why bother? I'm sure he has a pot to piss in and, yes, they will do whatever it takes to get as much as possible, and they will continue to pursue until the day Shirvell dies. Armstrong will get a dime and then some.

Arent you going to call Armstrong a psycho without a life? Aren't you going to defend Shirvell's actions? If you answer no to either questions, think about the last two emails you sent me.icon_wink.gif

Between Shrillville and the Philly-area swim club judgement, we're seeing that you don't shoot bigots to resolve your issues, you sic the law on 'em. Takes a while but it's worth it.

    Justice. Sometimes it actually works.

Yes, he can appeal, but the likelihood of the original verdict being overturned is small. Maybe the award will be lessened, but that's doubtful, too. Armstrong was never doing this for the money. He simply wanted an apology/retraction and never got it. So, he already can celebrate his victory, even if he never sees a penny. Hopefully, his attorney fees are paid for, though.

The kid didn't even want the money, and even then he only filed suit for $25,000. His lawyers only asked that Shirvell recant/apologize. Stupidly, he refused, and the judgment against him was far greater than if he'd just bit the bullet.

    He is, likely, unemployable now.

...and all Shirvell had to do was apologize. icon_confused.gif He made his choice.

After watching him on AC360 last year, I figured te guy was just plain nuts with a serious case of one track mind.

It's terrifying how Shirvell doesn't realize what an ass he made of himself. I would hate to be him right now. icon_sad.gif

I don´t feel sorry for him. He used a position of responsibility and power to abuse a college kid for no reason. He deserves what he got.

Oh, and he´s SO obviously a closet gay.

Great verdict... probably will be appealed and even if not, Chris may not ever receive any money... big difference in "being awarded" and collecting.
Knowing this right wing clown, Shirvell will appeal it immediately.. I'm sure we'll hear about it for some time to come.

    Glad this happened however!

I remember reading this long time ago.

I'm still confused why Shirvell cared so much about a University Student Body President. Do they actually hold any sort of power ? icon_confused.gif

I personally think it was the "power and acceptance" that Chris Armstrong had (as perceived by Shirvell) in the way he conducted his life.. his openness (and acceptance) of being gay. I think Shirvell hated it and developed a thing for Chris Armstrong in the process. Twisted to say the least... so yeah, Chris Armstrong had "power" in a sense. Something Shirvell has never had in his pathetic life.
