I met some great guys, that I would love to talk to on the phone (just as friends) but I get nervous when that comes up.

    Should I be?
Have you guys ever done it?

    I lost count.

Hell I've been texting all day to RJ'ers...some I've met, some I'll eventually meet since I travel.

    It's a non-issue anymore.

Yeah, Paul's so careless about his number that he even gave it to me. And I gave him mine. And he uses it - at 2:30 AM in the morning! Forget about stalkers or criminal privacy concerns, practical concerns like getting a good night's sleep are much more important. icon_mad.gif

    :::: Gives Paul a big hug ::::

[Call me anytime babe, even if you forget you're not living in Florida at present, but rather 3 hours away. BTW, I've been working on that project you gave me, should have something for you today]

Seriously, I've given my phone out to lots of guys here, mostly to help coordinate their arrival for a South Florida visit, or more recently my own trip to Orlando. It's allowed me to meet these guys and have a nice time together. No horror stories so far.

But nevertheless, use good judgment, and if you don't feel comfortable about it, or with a particular guy, then don't do it. You have the option of being selective.

    Oh yes, several times.

Just use your own good judgement.

Yes. In some ways a voice conveys much more than text far faster. Nice!

On a site with a few hundred thousand there are bound to be some unhinged and dishonest characters. Several of us have been extensively "researched" online by RJ members who then posted our private information to threads.

Information that could make us vulnerable to physical & monetary risks. Right now my partner (whose full name they discovered and posted on RJ) is dealing with extensive identify theft involving his banking, and issuance of credit cards in his name. We just got a raft of credit agency reports and forms to complete in the mail yesterday. Related to RJ? Not sure, might be his AOL account was hacked, or something completely unrelated, even a phishing virus that eluded his anti-virus program.

A telephone number is another bit of information that can be used to penetrate your privacy and reveal enormous amounts of personal info about you. Another thing these identity thieves did was create a Yahoo e-mail account for my partner and use it to replace the legitimate one associated with his bank account, to help them gain online access to his accounts.

Good judgment is indeed a very loose term. It means not posting your phone number in a thread, obviously. It means not giving it to a guy who's already been harassing you here.

But how do you know that the quiet guy isn't a lurking online crook, clever enough to be pleasant and non-controversial here? You really don't. I guess it's like gay sex: you always have to do a risk assessment, because there's always gonna be some risk. And if you want zero risk, have zero sex. And if you want zero problems from giving out phone numbers, give out zero phone numbers.

To Paulflexes and that's about it so far (which reminds me I have a new phone number I need to give him). Still looking forward to meeting more RJ members in real life though!

Yes... two, who know each other, which is fine. They're RJ gods so its fine... then there are RJ'ers who I want to give my number too, but would be pointless unless they asked.
