Never assume an outragious and obvious lie for political gain won't be believed.

    This from John Kerry

It's easy to look at the attacks, smears, and lies being told about President Obama and his record and say, "Come on, that's ridiculous. No one could possibly believe that."

Trust me: You and I learned the hard way eight years ago this August that in the new world we're living in -- one with 24-hour news cycles, the internet, blogs, the echo chamber, and now the new Citizens United-fueled Republican money machine -- even completely baseless attacks can stick if people don't call them out quickly enough. No matter how self-evidently false the attacks are, or how disreputable the people telling them may be, there's no attack that can't take hold.

Seeing the new outrageous attacks made against President Obama from a shadowy Republican-allied veterans group called OPSEC, which take issue with the mission to kill Osama bin Laden, remind me all too well of the notorious "Swift Boat" attacks I faced in the 2004 campaign. I honor and appreciate the service of my fellow veterans, but a false attack is a false attack -- no matter who's making it.

It's not enough to wish them away or dismiss them because they come in part from "birthers" who still won't concede that President Obama was born here in the United States.

No, we need to get moving now -- before it's too late.

Swift Boat 2.0: Conservative groups behind false attacks on the President’s national security record

When President Obama took office, the U.S. was engaged in two wars and and al-Qaeda’s leader Osama bin Laden was still at large. As commander-in-chief, President Obama refocused our priorities on the most significant security threats to the country and on fulfilling our promises to our servicemembers. Under the President, we have eliminated more than two-thirds of al-Qaeda’s core leadership—including bin Laden.

But a new cadre of conservative groups are trying to “Swift Boat” the President by manufacturing false attacks about his national security record. A collection of super PACs and organizations are deploying the same “discredited” and “hardball smear tactics” against President Obama that were used to attack Sen. John Kerry’s military service in 2004. Each group follows the same pattern, identifying themselves as separate, nonpartisan former U.S. military and intelligence operatives who have a “civic duty” to attack the President. But who exactly is behind these attacks?

A closer look at each group reveals an interconnected web of Republican operatives who are launching “Swift Boat”-style smear tactics against President Obama’s national security record.

    Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund

    The partisan agenda:

Launch false attacks on the President over the operation that killed Osama bin Laden

Falsely claim President Obama is deliberately leaking national security information

    The operatives:

OPSEC president Scott Taylor is a failed Republican candidate who lost his campaigns for public office in 2008 and 2010.

Spokesman Chad Kolton worked as a spokesman for the Bush administration, the Republican National Committee, and House Speaker John Boehner. Another spokesman Fred Rustmann appeared on Fox News during the Bush administration to—ironically—downplay the significance of leaks about CIA operative Valerie Plame’s undercover status, claiming it wasn’t “a big deal.” This serious breach of national security later led to four felony convictions for Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff.

OPSEC member Bill Cowan actually praised President Obama for making “the tough decision” to “go after bin Laden instead of taking the easy way out” before he joined a group attacking the President for that operation.

    Special Operations Speaks

    The partisan agenda:

Falsely claim President Obama is deliberately leaking national security information

    The operatives:

Founder Larry Bailey created the Vietnam Veterans for Truth in 2004, an organization that helped generate the Swift Boat attacks on Sen. John Kerry in 2004. In 2006, he launched the Vets for the Truth PAC using the same tactics to target Democratic Rep. John Murtha.

    Veterans for a Strong America

    The partisan agenda:

Launch false attacks on the President over the operation that killed Osama bin Laden

    The operatives:

Executive Director Joe Arends worked on both the Bush and McCain presidential campaigns and ran an unsuccessful campaign as a Republican candidate for office in Iowa. He had previously served as Executive Director of Vets for Freedom, an attack group bankrolled by former Bush Administration officials that was closely tied to members of John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

    Special Operations for America

    The partisan agenda:

Launch false attacks on the President over the operation that killed Osama bin Laden

    The operatives:

Montana’s conservative state senator Ryan Zinke founded the Super PAC, which has stated it is dedicated to “advocating for the election of Mitt Romney and like-minded candidates,” and has partnered with Veterans for a Strong America and its leader Joel Arends. Advisory board member Paul Vallely is also a member of Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund.

It is not surprising that the attacks these groups are launching lack any credibility. The President is committed to protecting our troops and our country’s security. The only way to mislead Americans about his record on national security is to resort to dishonest and overtly political smear campaigns that do a disservice to Americans who deserve to know the facts about the President’s record. As Arends said himself, “Yes, it’s the swift boating of the president.”

I suspect that, in the next few month, the increasingly desperate GOP/TEAbaggers will say ANYTHING to try to defeat President Obama.

My brother passes that sort of garbage on to me; I don't even open his e-mails, much less refute them. If someone can really believe the sort of rubbish he sends on, they're beyond reach.

It should be noted that the "Say Anything, Do Anything To Win" game works both ways --- so far we've heard from the dems that Mitt Romney is a possible Felon...a tax cheat...responsible for the death of a woman who died of cancer...that he hates gays...hates women...hates old people...mistreats animals...I mean the list of absurdities go on and on. November cannot get here soon enough.

Isn't it nice to know now that Romney's love of the Ryan budget plan takes away any need for conjecture from the dems ? With that they now have enough legitimate ammo based on fact to take Obama through the home stretch to his second term.

Millions have turned to Fundamentalist "faith," and that plays a huge role in each person's loss of the capacity to think for one's self. IF you are taught from a tender age NOT to question authority, and if you are taught that "God's word" is infallible, then scientific inquiry or any form of questioning that goes outside of the allowable box becomes anathema.

One of the best examples of a lie used for propaganda and political gain, is that lie that Iran threatened to "WIPE ISRAEL OFF THE MAP". The Iranian leader did say that the Israeli Zionist Regime would disappear as had the Soviet Union and other regimes, but he did not say Israel as a country should be or would be 'wiped off the map'.

Israeli Top Officials admitted to the above and there have been many an article explaining that the above was a mistranslation. yet in spite of even the New York Times explaining the truth, the lie has been spread to millions of people to the point that the facts are lost and the lie stands in its backing of possible war.

Look up antiwar.com 'Rumor of the Century, Iran threatens to Wipe Israel Off The Map'

Look up Israeli top official admits Iran did not threaten to Wipe Israel Off the Map.

Then keep a mental list of all the times the lie is told and retold to back up war in spite of the facts.
