Regardless of its legality where you live, do you want to get married?

Legality is a separate issue, but I would celebrate an anniversary from a declared commitment. So if you made it official after year 1 in your eyes, and it wasn't legal for you until 5 years later, then 21 years later is your 20th anniversary.

I have a pet peeve about people hedging their bets because the current laws are archaic in some places.

Yeah, my bf and I recently celebrated our eight year anniversary! Not sure if we'll have to start the count over if we make it legal.

I think there are really powerful lobby groups right now fighting against marriage for everyone in this country (supported financially by the likes of ::ahem:: Chick-Fil-A and other "family-oriented" businesses and Republican politicians.)
