Go with whey for its versatility. It digests a bit faster than casein, so it's really good post-workout. The best advice I've seen about how to choose a protein powder was Dr. Jim Stoppani's article in Muscle & Fitness: http://www.muscleandfitness.com/nutrition/supplements/does-your-whey-protein-powder-suck. I would avoid weight gainer proteins if I were you. Most are sugar-laden, super carb-heavy and expensive -- better to get your calories from whole foods whenever possible.

I've used Optimum Gold Standard for the very good cost to quality ratio, but I am really liking Muscle Pharm's Combat as well (their vanilla is my current favorite). In an effort to cut back on additives and artificial sweeteners, I'm trying Optimum's Gold Standard Natural starting this week. If the flavor is good, it'll probably be my go-to.

My other advice is to pick a flavor that is versatile and that you won't get tired of. Vanilla and Chocolate, while maybe more pedestrian, can be mixed well with other flavors to keep things interesting; if you get something like mocha cappuccino flavor there are going to be days when you don't want it and you don't have the easy option of mixing it with something. Also, buy the big container. Protein has a long shelf life, so it'll stay good for quite a while if you're not using it up quickly, and it'll save you money in cost per serving.

    Happy lifting. icon_smile.gif

Depends what you want it for. I usually get whey since I'm drinking them post workout but just bought some casein protein for the shakes I make before bed since it's slower digesting.

I've used this, too. The cinnamon roll flavor is awesome. It runs about $10 more per 5 lb than Gold Standard.

I do not like the cinnamon roll - not fond of cinnamon in general, but l ike the peanut butter chocolate and vanilla, yet to tried the banana. There is a nutrition store next to my gym, so if you present your membership gym membership they give you 10% off the price, so its pretty good.icon_biggrin.gif

I've found the Dymatize products to be very good and economical. I use the Elite Whey usually, and also the Iso 100 when cutting. The flavor is good(I generally get the vanilla), they mix well, have a good amino profile, and are very low in carbs, sugars, and sodium.

Also, I've found the best prices online. Usually Bodybuilding.com is lowest and they don't rape you on shipping. You can find coupons/discount codes as well, frequently for 10% off your entire order. Their service is very fast; when I place an order It's generally on my front porch in 4 days. The two times that there has been a problem with an order they corrected it immediately with no question.
