AUBURN, Maine -- Police in Maine are looking for a man who made off with pencils, notebooks, crayons and other school supplies that were meant to fill backpacks to be given to low-income students before the start of school.

The supplies were donated by shoppers at an Auburn Big Lots. They were going to be placed in the roughly 550 backpacks the United Way had collected for low-income students.

Joleen Bedard, executive director at the United Way, said a man pretending to be a United Way volunteer went to Big Lots on Monday and said he was there to pick up the supplies.

Bedard tells the Sun Journal ( http://bit.ly/R34cal) that United Way is scrambling for more school supplies and that despite the setback, the backpacks will be distributed as scheduled on Friday.

    Story's sad on two counts

That the supplies were stolen in the FIRST PLACE

.... and that there is a NEED to have school supplies DONATED in what is 'sposed to be the richest country in America

Ask the corprations and the wealthiest people who got their big fat tax cuts to donate something....... comon lets all hold our collective breathes onn that one
