yourname2000 saidI like it. We get the real stuff up here, with the wormwood...it has a very nice anise taste. :-) People say the wormwood makes you crazy, but the demon that lives in my head says that's just an old wives tale.

This is the one I usually drink....called "taboo".

Thanks! I had heard that it was similar to the Greek Ouzo - but I have never tried that either. icon_biggrin.gif

Damnit, gotta reply every single thread again!

Yes, I've tried it. Wasn't strong enough for me, at the time. I had 3 shots and was good.

There was an interesting documentary about it. You can stream it on Neflix or Amazon.

I would like to try it sometime. In the documentary they said that there were cheap knock-offs made with copper compounds (to give it a greenish color) early in the 20th century. Copper will do serious damage to your body, so that might be where some of the reports about madness came from.

I had some a few years ago right after it became legal in the U.S. We had a party at our house and a friend brought over a bottle and had this set up where he had this device to drip water and sugar into it and we could watch it change color as the water dripped into it. It was kind of cool but I couldn't tell you the difference between absinthe and ouzo. Both taste like licorice to me. And no, I did NOT see a green fairy! icon_lol.gif

I love absinthe. It's a much different high/drunk. It gives you a nice warm fuzzy all over feeling. Try drinking it in a hot tub, it's kind of amazing

It is 120 Proof. Enough of ANYthing that has that amount of alcohol will make You hallucinate.

I was always told it was more of a political thing than medical. Kinda the way Cuban cigars are technically banned in the U.S.A.

It is not meant to be drunk straight. There is a whole process with sugar and water.

It is now legal here in the U.S.A.

It produces a very specific buzz. I have never had enough to be intoxicated or hung-over.

Hmm - I guess I didn't drink enough of it. Maybe I need to get another bottle and test out this different drunk/high feeling y'all are writing about. icon_cool.gif

Absinthe was barred in many countries in the early 20th Century, because of the belief that it contained an addictive psychoactive drug. It was also looked down upon because of its early association with the "degenerate" Bohemian lifestyle of late 1800s Paris, and other European artist centers.

Absinthe is now sold again in most countries that permit other alcohol, and no longer considered addictive, nor socially suspect. Sometimes incorrectly called a liquor, it is in fact a spirit. I can drink it, but not a fan of it. Depending on the brand & proof, it's not uncommon to cut it with a little water, or let some ice melt in it if you prefer it chilled.

I wonder about the differences between absinthe here and in Europe, I was in Budapest about 12 years ago and had some at a private party. My head floated off my shoulders!! It was a TRIP! Just like hallucinogenic shit I did in hs. And NO hang over or nasty feeling e next morning.

The next time was in Prague where a shot was served in a tumbler of 7Up and a coffee bean was floating on top. Same effect! I don't know what it was in the old days (very popular in New Orleans btw) but the stuff in central Europe was very good.

I had absinthe in Montreal and it tasted like listerine. the bartender recommend swishing it in mouth until you couldn't anymore than swallowing it. Lets just say I saw a a dog in a santa hat on the TV in the middle of July when the tv wasn't even on. icon_lol.gif

It is the most disgusting shit I've ever tasted. However, I already knew I was going to hate it since I find anything anise or licorice-flavored absolutely repulsive.

What were you guys drinking? What I had was smooth - hot but very smooth. No strong licorice taste either. Quite enjoyable but it's not meant to be sipped. Blow out the flame and row it back. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
