I traveled once when we were living in Bogota, Colombia with my family. My mother had some relatives so we went and visited. I recalled it was very humid and hotter than Bogota which we did liked since we spent it at a resort in the pool as well as playing tennis. ELekid is correct, my father business also dictated to visit, since Medellin is one of the biggest textiles producers in the region. It not only influences Colombia's economy but the entire Latin America hemisphere. At that time, which was a couple of years some of the biggest designers, were Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, etc. resided there as many more have transitioned there because of its labor force. Additionally, some new designers have moved in, if you can you can visit the main factories and get some really good merchandise at great prices...but is not a gay mecca destination if that is what you are looking for. Additionally, I remember the architecture of the mixture of the old and new...Medellin favors itself as very modern, eclectic, city.... also its local population (Medelinense- were very polite... so you will see a lot of modern architecture...at times it reminded me when I was in Manchester, UK.
For example you might see a colonial building next to a glass shop or structure which it adds to a very cosmopolitan city in my opinion of embracing the old and the new.
