There are quite a number of modern middle eastern cities. Many of them are advancing much faster then the rest of the world, which is rather exciting.

It's just a crying shame that the cultural values of many people there refuses to modernize...

I look back fondly at my times in KSA. Many people who've never been to the middle east just dont understand.
I cant wait to go back one day

Let us know when women can vote, drive, travel independently without a male companion and throw off the burqa... without ANY restrictions...

or when gays can express their love... then we'll be impressed.

It always interests me when Americans prattle on about the issues in other countries when America (or any other country) has so many issues themselves. They are making massive social change in that part of the world dude. Like anything worthwhile it takes time.

Bringing negativity to a thread about a guy who's proud of his homeland? Classy. icon_rolleyes.gif

    I know right?

Although as an out gay western man living in the middle east certainly wasnt the easiest life choice I have made. There are so many aspects of Arab culture and Islamic culture (yes 2 different things) I miss and wish my own country would adopt.

ok mr. know it all ,
first, thank you for bringing out the negativity, that just a remarkable gesture.

second, the women there have the choice to wear the burqa or not.

and they have the right to vote, who said they didn't have it ??

a woman can travel wherever she wants with any male companion, and always has been.

where the f**k did you get these "facts" you claim ???

the media has messed up your mind.

why do you even care ? you are not Saudi .... icon_confused.gif

I was born in KSA and lived there for 18 years then moved to jordan for 4 years, again back to work in KSA for 1 year then i ran to UAE.

We have to be honest that modernity is in the buildings and not in people themselves (modernity is not using IPhone or S4 but mind openness, free thinkers, acceptance of others opinion and freedom of speech) and this applies to all middle east.

The woman can't drive in KSA only and i don't support that woman drives in KSA because it is dangerous with those starving non-educated people around at the time KSA does not provide the least safety precautions.

In UAE woman can do everything at anytime and that's why westerns tolerate living there (In fact UAE considered one of the top safe countries).

Gay life in middle east is miserable and depressing and i hope in 20 years the law against gays change which can be done by changing the education materials in schools.

I remember a christian student forced to pray with muslims everyday in KSA (in school).

The fundamental issue which prevents objective human beings from respecting The Kingdom for its (few) merits is the lack of freedom in The Kingdom verus the USA - religious fascism and Saudi (the family) fascism, perpetiuating virtual slavery of non-ruling citizens, gender inequality and absence of freedom of expression of any opposing view or practice. And, yes - we both served there for long enough to speak from informed experience.
