It's where Twitter and Flickr collide. If you don't like taking pics with your phone and sharing with your friends, then don't bother. You're just better off posting pics to your Facebook account.

Ask your great great grandchildren. They're probably in their 40's by now anyway, so they should know.

So it's a bunch of filters to apply to your pics to give them some sort of different look and feel?

more or less. they tend to invoke a nostalgia for old film style cameras. I don't know why my generation is obsessed with making pictures look old but we are.

often people then post them to facebook or something for everyone to talk about how pretty whatever canned effect they have chosen is.

You're already self-admittedly aged and addled, so applying filters to your images will only make them look like fossils.

You don't need to apply filters. The filters suck. But the picture sharing is cool. But only with your family and friends. Ever since FB bought Instagram, the comments have been spammy as hell. So turn on Privacy mode.

I can barely do FB. All those b'day requests and sparkly diamonds or whatever. I have no idea how to respond to them. I just write a note telling the sender my b'day....altho it's right on my FB page.

Ok I'm thinking the appeal of this is gonna be short lived. ... So if I had just waited a little longer, it would have been gone and I woUldn't have known or missed it.

Bad news, Facebook bought them for a billion dollars. Those filters are not going anywhere.

In fact Instagram is ascending rapidly, as the choice photo-sharing social network This is understandable, given that it is well integrated with existing social media (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, etc). Many social media pros are increasingly turning to Instagram networks over others, due to its more creative nature, ease of consuming content, and relative lack of social "noise" (think of the deluge of tagged and linked content on Twitter, and Facebook's annoying app requests, baby photos, event listings, and continually changing privacy confusion).
