I think tattoos can be pretty sexy! I was thinking about getting one. I'd rather not pick one from a book, or get a corporate logo and I'm not an artist.

Can you commission someone to do it? Do you like your tattoo? I hear they are addicting!

Hey I actually have a tattoo on my back that i had thought out years ahead of time. In the futur i plan to have a daughter and her name will be Serenity Marie so I looked up possible symbols on the internet and found one for Serenity in Chinese Kanji. I made sure to place have it placed where nobody at work could say anything and where nobody in bed would think it awkwardly placed. I had it placed on my neck and might have it's picture on this site. If you do get a tattoo just make sure you did the research if it's symbolism that you won't regret it 20-30 years from now because they are permanent, and to make sure your job isn't affected if you plan to get it in a more visible location. try getting a fake where you are planning to place the tattoo and wear it around for about a week and if you think it looks good and other's have said good or no commentary on it than go ahead and pay the tatoo parlor to stab you with that ink needle a few hundred times. lol
GOOD LUCK!!! VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON!!!

I planned my tattoo for 2 years. I knew what I wanted, and I self-imposed a waiting period of 2 years before I got it. This way, after this period of time, I would know that it was really something I wanted and it wasn't a fad.

I think about the placement every now and then, thinking maybe I should have put it in a different place, but I don't have any regrets about getting it. Just be totally sure, then you won't regret it.

yep you can bring a prototype/final image/icon you want to transfer on to your body. It's a good idea cause bodies come in all sizes-scale counts I think at least. The artist has no reason to charge you more, in fact if they suggest more money, suggest going elsewhere. Find a legitimate tattoo artist someone who really can draw create in every sense.
I have two at the moment-one in the lower left abd quadrant and one on my right deltoid. I',m getting a few more around my umbilicus toward the inguinal fold.
    cheers triathlete.

you should wait a year after finding the design you want before putting anything on your body permanently. if you still like the design after a year you will be less likely to regret it at a later time. and a few words of advice: never tattoo a name on yourself, and never get a character in some language you cannot read write and speak, and (both of the above are incredibly tacky)

I have two small tattoos and am in the process of getting another, much larger one on my back. I've only gotten the outline done and have to go back twice more to get it filled in. I think tattoos are great, but make sure you find an artist who really loves what s/he does and is also able to help you create something unique. I'm fortunate because I have one of the best tribal artists working on mine. I can't wait until it's done! I'll be sure to post a pic.

I waited for 3-4 years before getting my first tattoo. I Love my tattoo now even though I had a horrible experience. I would agree with Chungo on never getting a name tattooed on yourself. My sister got her girlfriends name as a tattoo in the form of a barcode. And even though only she knows what it means she still regrets it since they are no longer together.

I got my astrology Symbol on my back (Gemini). People are always thinking it's the Pi symbol .. but not quite ... looks more like the roman numeral two.

As with my bad experience. I got a bad case of MRSA on my back that came in through my tattoo and now I have 10 scars above my tattoo where they had to lance the infections. I fought that for a good 4-5 months before I finally got ridd of it. Talk about an expensive tattoo.

They really are a personal thing. I have a black feather on my right ankle I got when I was 30.

Take some time, think about what you want and scan the web. A good tattoo artist will help you customize it to whatever you want.

I've had people ask me why I have the number '30' tattooed on my arm.

It's actually the Sanskrit symbol for AUM/OM. I got it during the crazy adolescent period right after I came out. I wouldn't get a tattoo today, but I don't feel any need to get this one removed.

Your are so right tattoos are sexy but some are just hideous.

Please do not get the tacky M-dot tattoo because you just finished an Ironman. Get something that means something. I see a lot of triathletes get something to do with triathlon which is cool but the M-dot is like getting the Nike Swoosh tattooed on you. Its branding.

Go find a good tattoo place and get them to design something for you. As long as you have an idea as to what you want then they can design it.

When I get my tattoos, one of them is going to say Fortitudine Vincimus which means in latin...by endurance we conquer. Not sure of the font and location yet but was thinking the calves one word on each one.

I also want a tribal tattoo around my right hop thigh and leg. I will have to get this one created.

A friend of mine got a flaming baseball on his right back shoulder and it looks so stupid and cheesy. He got it redone and it looks a litte better but really if he had it done by a decent artist then it could have looked awesome but it looks like shit.

Take your time and get something special and something that means something to you.

if you know of any graphic designers, ask them to help you out. I had a designer who works for me design one based on some initial thoughts I had. They actually improved upon what I wanted and it turned out great. Took it into the tattoo parlor and the replicated it exactly - no problem

I just finished designing my second, much larger tattoo - again with the help of a graphic designer. Can't wait to get it done.

Although tattoos are getting to be as common as dirt, I agree--they're sexy! I still like mine and am very happy with it probably because it was at least a year in the thinking stage. At first I was disappointed when I was told the symbol I was getting wasn't a good idea because it features a circle and in time it would change shape. Then I woke up to the fact that part of the symbol means "impermanence" so changing over time is actually appropriate. I'm now leaving myself open to getting another one that's as meaningful as the first one when the inspiration strikes me. Take your time, think about what you want (get "Asian" characters checked and double-checked for accuracy if you go that route), get a good artist and go for it!

My friend's brother just showed me his John Deere tattoo. I laughed a great deal (after someone explained who the hell John Deere actually is!)

tattoos are addicting. i got my first one last october. look at me now!! LOL make sure u go to a reputable shop. they will tell u their shop minimum fee up front. ask to see the artists book. a good one has one. to see his work. tell him/her what u are interested in. if you dont already have a sketch they can usually draw up something for you in a matter of minutes. remember these people are all artists. they just draw on the skin not on regular canvas. and remember it hurts. LIKE HELL. dont let anyone tell u any different. and depending on where u have urs done, it can hurt even more. =)

Someone asked my about my tattoo last month.

Turned out that I was walking around so much with the imprint of a greasy chain ring on my calf, the girl at the post office thought it was permanent.

I guess it looks OK, but I think I need a shower.

Wow! Those are really great ideas! Seems like the main point is to wait.

Yeah can_duathlete the M-dot seemed too corporate.

And some kind of graphic of a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner didn't seem to form in my mind.

And "Work makes Freedom" in German seems a bit, too...I don't know, fascist lol!

I'm just glad I didn't get a cartoony hornet next to my penis.

    Seriously, I almost did that.

DO NOT WAIT! AND MAKE SURE YOU GO BIG! GO TO A MAJOR CITY TO GET ONE! set up a consoltation, discuss what you are interested in getting, they will draw it out, fit it to where you want it, then put your pussy in your pocket cause it is gonna hurt.

    ps

stay clear from tribal, and kanji...cause they are...just dont...i am just saying i would want my tattoo artist to enjoy the work he does on me, and trust me a chinese symbol, or tribal design is like piercing a teenie boppers navel. no offense to those sporting those designs, it is what it is...i have a celtic knot and that is just a step above a henna tattoo. lol.

Though I don't have one at the moment, I have thought about getting one. I have always had the same symbol in mind on what I want. The Borg symbol from Star Trek.

    http://www.st-minutiae.com/academy/anthropology114A/Borg.gif

I think i would get it placed on my back near my shoulder.

I would have to agree that if you are going to get one, think about what you want. I like the suggestion of getting a temporary one where you plan on getting it, that way you have a chance to live with it and see how it affects you.

Have one and love it... Think it might realy be addictive though because I'm thinking of extending mine further.
I would also advise anyone who is thinking about it to go and make an appointment ASAP!
It's the most errotic type of pain... right where it meets pleasure.
I almost get hot just by thinking about that buzzzz
    FUCK YES!!!!
I also did'nt like the idea of putting someone else's work on my bod so I drew it myself. Most tat artists are however willing to work with the client on a personalised tattoo
