We have olympic "sports" like shooting, equestrian, synchronized swimming, etc. Yet the third most popular sport in the world, rugby, is not an olympic sport and hasn't been since the early 1900s, when America won the gold.
Well, at least the USA is the reigning champion. Of course this is highly unlikely given the modern rugby landscape (sorry, Eagles!). Still, what gives? How is this not an olympic sport?
Oh, and if you are a "jock" who is into shooting, equestrian, or synchronized swimming, get lost. This is a rugby category thread and I don't wanna hear from you right now. ;-P Those were just examples of less popular "sports".

I have a lot of buds in Shreveport that were ruggers. Can't understand why it is not a competitive sport, but synchronized swimming is.

I was whoring on at the time and ran with those Shreveport guys against the home team. Great guys! Later I joined the Huns. They didn't hold it against me. ;-)

i agree with you ruggers, it really does need to be a sport in the olympics. I don't like how there is now BMX in the Olympics, but i have a lot of reservations about these Beijing Olympics that i don't like. Anyways Rugby should be in, in my opinion

Agreed, it should be in. It's probably the best sport in the world. However, how many of the 200-someodd countries who participate in the Olympics play?

Totally stolen from Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union_at_the_Summer_Olympics) Italy in 1960, the Soviet Union in 1980, and South Korea in 1988 made requests to have rugby union brought back. The 1980 request did not pass, and although the 1988 games came close to seeing the sport's admission, which was backed by the International Rugby Football Board (now, International Rugby Board, IRB). In 1995, the IRB became an IOC Recognised International Federation. In 2002, a plan was presented to induct rugby sevens, golf and the Chinese martial art of wushu. Sevens was one of five sports that submitted a proposal to the IOC at a meeting in Singapore for inclusion in the 2012 games. The IOC stated that no sport would be added unless others were dropped. The IRB was confident that the sport would finally be included in the official Olympic program. However, the selection of two sports out of the five nominees as potential 2012 sports went to squash and karate, as determined by a voting procedure.

Haha...and coming in 2012. The moonwalk event. And in 2016, the giant bin of colored plastic balls. 2020 brings the introduction of the Slip'n'Slide event. I'm just waiting for hopscotch... I am so there.
