RealJock Scholarship?

This is kind of a wild idea I had and I'm not sure how feasible it is or what kind of legal issues would be involved but maybe someone with a better understanding of those issues could chime in. I noticed in the What Do You Do For a Living thread that there are a lot of people with really good careers and I'm assuming the salaries that come with those careers. And on the other hand, I read posts from college students talking about not having enough money for books or to have a computer repaired or even for good food. How much trouble would it be to start a Realjock college scholarship? I remember someone set up a fund for the abused bus monitor pretty easily but how about an annual scholarship awarded to one or more deserving students? I realize there are a ton of issues that go along with this from who's in charge financially to who makes the decision on the recipient. But I'm just throwing this out there. What do you think? Is it even something that we could do without a ton of red tape? If you're doing alright for yourself would it be something you'd be interested in contributing to? And if you're a student would it be something you think would be helpful? Turning this germ of an idea over to the smarter people now.....

Noble idea, but the logistics around it don't make it seem practically feasible.

That's a nice idea but the execution, especially with some of the people here, might be a big problem. How would you know who to truly give it to, how to avoid abuse of the kind hearted people willing to give and if there's not enough to go around how do you decide the person who needs it most?

Coach Mike, it's a really nice gesture and I like how you always talk with optimism or at least wanting to better this place and other people's lives. If I were able to, and I knew someone on here who was in need and I knew them well enough, I'd probably try and help them out. As a student myself, if I were in that situation I'd greatly appreciate it, although I might sound like a freak but I hate asking people for help so I might be hesitant.

    I couldn't even.

"Write an essay about how [the G.A.Y. threads changed your life/ you fell in love with your straight friend/ masc straight acting is or isn't good for the gay community]."

Think about the explosion of sock accounts if you voted for the scholarship.

Pretty much. Trolls fuck with people for pure sport around here. If they got a whiff of potential free money at stake it'd take it to another level.

It is a great idea - and is a testament to why everyone around here loves you Coach_Mike because you have such a big heart.

However, it is logistically a challenge and would be very difficult to manage.

Then make another website devoted solely to that cause.

    Only real students may apply.

Verification via proof of authenticity REQUIRED. icon_wink.gificon_idea.gif

The idea is incredibly noble. Perhaps to circumvent all the legal issues we could find one or more organisations that are trustworthy and reliable that provide scholarships and donate to them?

Sounds like a great idea.. I would be all for it and as a longtime member would be quick to support, but.....

    1) Money creates a different sort of situation. We would probably need to create a legal entity, a foundation, a trustee for these funds. Either the trustee or trustee board would have responsibility for for the purposeful use and prudent care of these funds.

    2) There would have to be a means to determine distribution of these funds... whether it be via vote of the RJ community or by the board that RJ members might elect. That would have to be determined first.

    3) The RJ administration may or may not endorse such a thing. I would suggest that they be on board in at least supporting such a endevour, but would probably want to separate and apart from any processes.. that would be for them to speak to.

    4) This really represents something this site could be proud of.. but structure and agreement would be paramount to success. We dont' want a fflop and thus all would need to be considered carefully and provisions added for problems.

Now having said this... I would encourage those who want to support it to volunteer. I would be willing!

I'm not sure about how the selection criteria would be established, and the scholarship(s) funded. And whether RJ might find itself the subject of lawsuits by those not selected. Does this program apply to all members internationally? I see a big can of worms here, even though the concept is noble.

Rather, I would encourage any individual RJ members who have the resources - of money, services or connections - to make direct contributions to needy members, for any purposes, not just college. I know of some here who do that, but not publicized, to avoid a flood of begging requests.

There is a website where teachers can go and write a sort of grant proposal for funds for specific things they need whether it's $50 to buy hand sanitizer so kids don't pass germs around to thousands of dollars to buy digital microscopes for a biology class. The donors look at the proposals, choose one and provide the funds. Maybe something like that could be a possibility.....

Any distributed payments would probably have to go directly to the tuition office rather than paid directly to the scholarship recipient.

    Great idea!

The money would have to be directly paid to the school of the recipient. All the legal document claiming the student has admission into an institutions and how much money they need for school fees, books, and anything else will have to be submitted to the people making the decision.

Yeah, the heart's in the right place. but the execution...

Of course not everyone's this shallow...but I can see if it came down to it...

There's twocontenders to win this scholarship...

One's a black guy on RJ whose a little pudgy, has only 1 photo, his dad died of cancer, and his mother works two jobs at Walmart and Walgreens. This guy works at a pet shop with all his free time, the rest of his time is dedicated to going to college despite the tuition killing his mother. He's so poor he has to skateboard three miles to get to his campus on Mon, Wed, Fri to get to his 9:00 class. He has to leave at 7:00 AM. He takes four classes. He's already taken several thousand dollars out of student loans and has applied to several scholarships, but hasn't heard anything back. His profile pic is him with his mom.

The other one's any of the white, tanned 20 something year old dudes who wins Man of the Day with the eight pack and the biceps and the face of Chris Evans with 20 pics on RJ showing off his body and killer smile. His parents are divorced and he didn't bother applying for any scholarships during his senior year of high school or anytime afterward. He works no jobs along with being a student, he only has two classes. His profile pic is akin to that of Marky Mark's Calvin Klein ad.

Knowing the majority of the dudes on here.....who's going to get that scholarship?

But I like your idea. Most people wouldn't even think about helping someone in such a profound way. You're a good guy.

Very noble...but gay men are simply too selfish to stick to such a plan long term........not to mention it wont work..some lawsuit will start because of it....as from what i can see..when it comes to "man of the day".....smh.....i guess all the beneficiaries would be white...since its a real jock scholarship and all... icon_twisted.gif...With that said..ill forward you to a legal argument ...

Double edged for sure, being my last semester I could really use one, but we would definitely need a third party I believe to settle the logistics of it and make sure it is fairly earned.
