Once upon a time, there was a Forum...

and the Forum had many, many members and many interesting threads.

But there was rancour in the Forum and discord in the threads, because members did things that annoyed other members, and vice versa. And one member would complain "I dont like this." And another member would say, "oh yeah, well, I dont like that."

So it was decided that complete harmony should be brought to the Forum. And a plan was devised. Each member would tell what another member did that annoyed him and from then on no member could do that.

So the first member said "I dont like this!" And nobody could do "this" from then on. Then the second member said, "I dont like that!" And nobody could do "that" from then on. And so it went, member after member adding to the list of forbidden "thises" and "thats."

And after every member had spoken and added to the list of forbidden "thises" and "thats," there was complete harmony.

There also was no more Forum.

    What happened?

Caslon took too many vicodins and then decided it was a good idea to drink a full bottle of wine to flush his system.

I think Caslon's fairy tale is a bit like the backlash against Political Correctness. In my opinion, yes, at times PC seemed to go too far, but that did not, in my head, devalue the idea of finding alternate means of uncompromised self-expression that avoid creating unnecesary offense or hurt feelings.

In some other thread on RELIGION, I compared "I disagree with your point" and "Anyone who thinks/believes XYZ is a blithering idiot."

I would never advocate forbidding terms like "you're an asshole" from this forum, although I would understand a recipient's confusion and the potential for reaction.

I also think that suggesting gentler alternatives and advocating civilized discourse is a far cry from being "thought police."

"When I was a journeyman printer, one of my companions, an apprentice hatter, having served out his time, was about to open shop for himself.

His first concern was to have a handsome signboard, with a proper inscription. He composed it in these words, 'John Thompson, Hatter, makes and sells hats for ready money,' with a figure of a hat subjoined.

But thought he would submit it to his friends for their amendments.

The first he showed it to thought the word 'Hatter' tautologous, because followed by the words 'makes hats,' which showed he was a hatter. It was struck out.

The next observed that the word 'makes' might as well be omitted, because his customers would not care who made the hats. If good and to their mind, they would buy them, by whomsoever made. He struck it out.

A third said he thought the words 'for ready money' were useless, as it was not the custom of the place to sell on credit. Every one who purchased expected to pay. They were parted with, and the inscription now stood, 'John Thompson sells hats.'

'Sells hats!' says the next friend. 'Why, nobody will expect you to give them away. What then is the use of that word?' It was stricken out, and 'hats' followed it, the rather as there was one painted on the board.

So the inscription was reduced ultimately to 'John Thompson,' with the figure of a hat subjoined."

The point is...if we have to edit the way everything we post is posted so as to please everybody, then nothing will be acceptable to post.

So going around pointing out that you dont like the way something that someone has posted is really quite pointless.

jaydub saidthe lady doth protest too much, methinks icon_razz.gif

yeah, here's a good example. It adds nothing to the discussion. ..."The Queen turned crimson with fury, and, after glaring at her for a moment like a wild beast, screamed `Off with her head! Off--' "

    ........................................

"And after showing his post to all his friends for their comments before posting it, he was left with "Once upon a time, there was a Forum." ... icon_eek.gif

Caslon, I think you are often mean spirited and overly quick to judge, and the incessant cats exhaust me, but I would defend to the death your right to be so.

Colm, I have always thought you were as dumb as a box of rocks and your inane comments bore me to tears*, but I would defend to the death your right to be so.

*I just didnt think we were supposed to go around saying such about each other. But you have shown me that it's ok.

I am as dumb as a box of rocks, and one day, if I work diligently, perhaps I can reach the lofty heights of Lolcattery, but I just don't think I'm there yet.

Then come a time, were people where afraid to speak, for fear of a squeak, and no Real Joy, was to be had. The people of the Village, started to become sad. And began to say nothing for fear of reprisals.

To long from being in Repression, so out with this recession. So people started to talk, and with more freedom of speech, than before they be repressed, into the dark Ages.

But other People of the village so controlling, and grumpy they had lost control, and they felt dumpy, they ceased on a moment, with acid from hell.
