" The head of the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) Jim Wallace says smoking is healthier than the lifestyle that would be promoted by same-sex marriage. Mr Wallace made the claim in a debate on marriage equality with Greens leader Christine Milne at the University of Tasmania today.

Answering a question from a student on the relevance of his views, he said health statistics among the gay community were worse than those for smokers.

"I think we're going to owe smokers a big apology when the homosexual community's own statistics for its health - which it presents when it wants more money for health - are that is has higher rates of drug-taking, of suicide, it has the life of a male reduced by up to 20 years," he told the audience. "

WTF?! Religious imbeciles like him conveniently forget that it's people like them that drive some gay people to taking their lives.

although i think the guy is a twit,
Being Here in Perth and watching the gay guys around me, and what they get up to Im not suprised that they would live 20 years less on average.

Now before everyone goes nuts at me, icon_rolleyes.gif

Im not saying this is typical of all gay men everywhere, yet it does make me think there must be other cities around the world where gay men feel so shitty about themsleves that they over eat, take drugs, engage in unsafe sex practices and suffer depression.

Obviously by keeping us marginalised more gay men would suffer depression and partake in such activities. So to me it makes sense to accept homosexuality and build up the self esteem of young gay people nullifying these terrible life choices.

I have been shocked by catching up with gay mates over here that are the same age and younger who look terrible and have a bad sense of self, all this considering that Perth heteros are very (in general) accepting and could care less who you fuck.

No, I agree. Theres a big issue with drugs and gay guys. Now, the gay population isnt that big, so it what might be 'this number out of all gay men" needs to be scaled and compared to the number of straight people who have the same values in unprotected sex and drug-use. A smaller percentage of straight people do drugs because theres thousands more straight people. The data is misleading.

Self-destructive behavior among gay men is largely a result of negative societal views and discrimination. Whether it's suicide or harmful lifestyle choices like substance abuse, the cause is external, not intrinsically internal.

And it's also due to the often solo and lonely lives that many gays live. When it's just yourself, with little to look forward to, you can become careless, even reckless with your life. As compared to being married, where you are also living for another guy, with responsibilities to him, not to mention the greater happiness & support you likely are getting from each other. Studies comparing married versus unmarried straights also show this life expectancy advantage for the married, so it isn't just a gay phenomenon.

Therefore gay marriage would IMPROVE gay life expectancy. This Wallace is arguing statistics that come from a community that does NOT have marriage. He actually MAKES the case for gay marriage, but is too fanatical and delusional to realize it.
