What a causal fallacy. Mr Wallace seems to assert that the gay lifestyle makes people more likely to be drug dependent, and more likely to resort to suicide.

However, the reason people resort to these acts is not because they are gay. People resort to these acts because they lack the support structures that would allow them to become fully functioning members of society. The discriminatory views of organisations such as the ACL marginalise gay people, and make them more likely to resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms.

...which is what I was about to post, but mine included the word 'actions' as well as 'views'. Well said.

I guess American religious lunatics aren't the only ones! Or perhaps our right-winger's lunacy has influenced them?

There was also this one from Australia. And it is very scary. There has also been a few stories of these lunatic tactics in the UK. America seems to be exporting its Christian-right hate.

Ironically most of the African & pacific nations that were previously European colonies have kept their archaic laws relating to homosexuality

I mean to say, people are entitled to their point of view, and other people don't have to take it on. being secure within myself, such things are of not personal issue to me. Yes I have lost many mate from unprotected sex; but we all did not and no not get infected, but we all die one way or another.

Think of the people who do all the right things, eat all the right things, don't dink or smoke yet die young, get hit by a bus, and as they are going under the wheel must think, I should had those chips, or got drunk last night.

Whether the number of deaths within the gay community is similar to that of smoking is not the point. It may well be true... But it is completely irreverent to compare the two.

Jim Wallace wants to warn children of the dangers of homosexuality as if it were the same thing as smoking, but the problems he is talking about aren't innate to being gay, they are probably the result of poor drug and sex education, as well as depression faced by gay people living in an homophobic society.

Does Jim Wallace want to help prevent gay people from unnecessary death through better education? No, he just wants to prevent gay marriage and possibly gay people from existing.

Self-destructive behavior among gay men is largely a result of negative societal views and discrimination. Whether it's suicide or harmful lifestyle choices like substance abuse, the cause is external, not intrinsically internal.

And it's also due to the often solo and lonely lives that many gays live. When it's just yourself, with little to look forward to, you can become careless, even reckless with your life. As compared to being married, where you are also living for another guy, with responsibilities to him, not to mention the greater happiness & support you likely are getting from each other. Studies comparing married versus unmarried straights also show this life expectancy advantage for the married, so it isn't just a gay phenomenon.

Therefore gay marriage would IMPROVE gay life expectancy. This Wallace is arguing statistics that come from a community that does NOT have marriage. He actually MAKES the case for gay marriage, but is too fanatical and delusional to realize it.

Confused because the same website has an article stating that Gillard won't be speaking at the conference now.

"Ms Gillard today branded Mr Wallace's comment ''offensive'' and said she would not speak at the lobby's conference.
''To compare the health effects of smoking cigarettes with the many struggles gay and lesbian Australians endure in contemporary society is heartless and wrong,'' she said in a statement.
''Although everyone is entitled to their own view, these statements reiterated again today on behalf of ACL are totally unacceptable"
