Foods to avoid while bulking

I've just started the 12 week muscle building workout and I'm trying to eat enough to help me bulk up. I think I even caught myself gnawing at my armrest in the boardroom... That got me thinking, "Is this the type of stuff I should be eating?" Lots of discussions about weight gaining are about eating but that's very vague.

    What should I be avoiding???

Are there certain food groups I should be avoiding, or more particularly, specific types of foods within a food group I should avoid. I am pretty lean and never had a problem with gaining body fat, but if I throw a ton of food into my stomach, who knows what's going to happen. I want to bulk up without putting on fat.

    Thanks for the help!

Try to minimize the amount of simple sugars you eat.

Butter isn't carbs, Calibro. But it sure is good!

Veggies and fiber like oatmeal, whole grains, brown rice, buckwheat, beans, and apples, and bananas and all those fruits and stawberries and blueberries and nuts is carbs and they sure are good, too.

No see, it's like you have your cousins, and then you have your first cousins.

I thought my cousins were my first cousins, but then there were my mom's cousins and my grandparent's inlaws and some pile of numbered cousins and all sorts of people I couldn't figure out, but who ate like horses at Thanksgiving, and my aunt an uncle and the lady from across the street.

Thank God we had a small family.

Oh god, no, honey, what kind of a mother do you think I am?

Why, do you want a little bit? Because if you're gonna drink, I'd rather you do it in the house.

Hey e11even, That's awesome that you're starting up the 12-week plan. I got through about 8 weeks of it, before I trailed off, I think a holiday through me off course. It's a great one, I got huge results from it. Keep up the good work!

yourname2000 saidYou look ecto....you'll have to eat a shit-ton of calories to gain any weight. My understanding is that you can worry less about 'what' you eat than the rest of us....any abundance of fats and carbs for you is as likely to just make your body make better use of the proteins you feed it (rather than just metabolize them into energy shortly after you eat them.) And without an abundance of calories, my understanding is that an ectomorph's body is susceptible to "catabolizing" its muscles (which basically means your body is eating/metabolizing its own muscles for energy rather than keep it as muscle.)

    This may help:

I'm an ecto and I eat EVERYTHING and often. Dave can tell you what i eat lol. It doesn't matter so much what you eat as long as you're constantly eating. Today I had 3 nutella sandwiches for breakfast and a half gallon of milk. for a snack i had 4 peanut butter sandwiches and some macroni i made and a protein drink. for lunch i had 2 steaks (the circle ones forgot whats its called) with rice and corn, then i went to go lift. After i had another protein drink with a footlong from quiznos. went home to catch my yanks play and had 2 steaks by itself with a half gallon of milk. For dinner I'm going out to louie and ernie's for a big ass pizza. Then i'll come back later and lurk on RJ while eating some donuts and fries while chugging some sweet tea.

just keep eating and eat often.

I think you have to be careful.

As an ecto (hi-five, me too) you can eat a lot of terrible food and not suffer the weight consequences, but it doesn't mean you should do it. Your goal is to change your body.. so you should focus more on eating a lot more protein, good carbs, and fats.

Its not easy but its a lot more personally rewarding imo.

The best way to gain wait (from one guy trying to another) is to eat balanced. Make sure you're getting the proportional amount of certain foods your supposed to (greens to proteins to sugars). Increase your calorie count to about 3000 proportionally (if you can). Assumedly you are on a budget, in which case you may not be able to immediately, but, try and get this:
    http://www.vitacost.com/bsn-true-mass-gainer-chocolate
it is a non-harmful (and extremely effective) way to gain weight without using steroids or something disgusting or affording $1000 of food a week.
    enjoy
