My journey to Jamba Juice.

I went into Jamba Juice today all nice and sweaty from walking around in the heat— lo and behold, a guy from my high school was at the cash register. Let’s call him Bob. At this point in the day I just wanted to get my smoothie and get out. Bob and I never really mingled much in high school. He was part of the "in" crowd so I still remembered his name. We had two classes together freshman year (the year I was a nobody) and we never exchanged a single word with each other. Ever.

So I walk up to the counter and give me order. I can never remember that the first thing they ask at Jamba Juice is your name. Oops. Bob backtracks and asks “It’s [Neight], right?”

    It’s. Neight. Right.

    This dude knows my name.

From the 4 years since we’ve been in the same room together and the zero times we’ve interacted, he knows my name.

I smiled and said “Yeah!”, ordered, and paid. When the smoothie was ready, I picked it up and left.

Then my mind spun into a whirlwind of thoughts:

I was a nobody during my freshman year— how does Bob remember my name?

Did I build myself up to become popular enough for people that I barely know to know my name?

Was I “popular” by senior year?

What happened to the old Neight?

I spent the entire trip back home thinking about my high school experiences and the image I unknowingly built as my identity.
Who knew three words could put my brain on the fritz.

Maybe he was just good with names.

There was something he remembered about you. Something good/positive. Maybe he wanted to get to know you back then, but wasn't sure if you felt the same. Or maybe he felt pressured to stay within his clique.

Anyways, high school is gone and past. You can try to get to know him now. Go back again and see if you can strike up a short conversation. And build up on that with future visits.

The dude's not on RJ... as far as I know. icon_exclaim.gif
I don't really see a point in trying to kindle a friendship since I'm leaving for college in less than two weeks.
    "Hey let's be friends"
    "Okay"
"By the way I'm leaving town in a week, bye"
    "Bye"

well, I'm sure you'll be back home at some point? Thanksgiving? Winter break?? Semester breaks, etc??? Wouldn't it be nice to know someone who can hook it up with a discount at least?
