This is awesome to see one of Obama's former hack (D) Rahm Emanuel (mayor of chicago) take on the chicago public teachers union in a bitter strike over teachers pay. The city of Chicago is broke yet the teachers union wants to bleed the taxpayers for more money. What a joke when they say its about the education of our children. They use the children of Chicago in the public education system as hostages to get what they want. A reason to remove education from the public sector? These children are trapped in a horrible public system while the teachers who claim to support them just want better wages and benefits from the taxpayers. Its funny to see democrats vrs. democrats on this issue in such a disfunctional city

The debate is about teacher evaluation and standardized testing among students. Its happening around the country. Remnants of failed Bush policies- no teacher left standing.

Its not a war on teachers. Its unshackling teachers from the remnants of failed bush policies- no teacher left standing.

U missed the point. Teachers pay is based on student performance. Student performance is based on standardized tests. Many factors determine student performance on standardize tests than just the quality of the teacher. Is it good educational policy to have a teacher teach a test rather than teaching students to think critically? Is it fair to base a teachers pay on standardized test results that have so many variables related to outcome. This is the debate!

    Rahm Emmanuel is no Democratic.

I'm glad the Chicago teachers are striking. He's been fucking with them since he was elected.

Why would teachers unions possibly want performance based measures? Unions have quashed even the possibility of voting on performance based rewards elsewhere... a reminder that meritocracy is just incompatible with public unions.

I'm a man, not a sock, thank you very much. Rahm Emmanual was president Obama's right hand man, a very influentual Chicago democrat. Could it be that his city doesn't have the money to pay ever increasing salaries to what may be ineffective employees? And there is no G. W. Bush program called no teacher left standing. It's just hysterical words from an imaginative child having a hissy fit. Someone incapable of having a simple, civil conversation about things without getting furious, jumping up and down, and screaming. I'm serious, dude, calm the hell down!! I'm one man for God's sake!!

The school system needs to be improved, but getting rid of public school altogether would be like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It would disenfranchise so many Americans. This country was built on public education, after all.

You have it wrong. The debate is how to measure teacher performance. The Bush policy that glorified standardized testing is no child left behind. Now SHUT THE HELL UP!

No, I will not shut up, I'm gonna be heard, just like your big, bad assed attitude. What are you, 14? Were you sent to bed without supper? The teachers in Chicago are striking for a number of reasons, and they are being opposed (or oppressed, depending on your point of view) by a powerful, well known DEMOCRAT. But you can't blame him, so you stretch and weave the issue into something you can blame on a past president who has little or nothing to do with current union contracts in individual cities, if he ever did. Why don't you blame Emmanuel, who could resolve the issue by giving the teacher's union whatever they want? Or is that a cardinal sin in your world? Take a look in the mirror once in a while, and you just might see why people recoil in horror from your ferocity. MING!!

Given how poorly Chicago and Illinois have been managed, why shouldn't others find it funny with the self inflicted wounds that have been repeated over and over. Once or twice it might be sad, but this *is* comical that teachers are so offended and self entitled by the idea that they might be evaluated that they are willing to strike.

I know repubs want to make this out to be a democrat vs democrat and union vs non union debate. But frankly, it is not. We are having the same debate here in ultra conservative blood red Texas which is a right to work state.

Its the method of evaluation stupid. Not the act of being evaluated.

I suspect most of your antagonizing posts are for your own amusement, since you're not even from this country. Why don't you participate in your own country's politics, rather than pointing your finger and laughing at the public school educators in this country?

    You're just a shallow self righteous bully.icon_mad.gif

    A few relevant facts...

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/on-air/stossel/blog/2012/09/11/teachers-strike-chicago

    cps-elementary_1.png

The Chicago union doesn't want its teachers judged by their students' performance. I understand why. Ninety-three percent of the teachers are rated either "Superior" or Excellent". The kids don't do as well: 80% of eighth graders are "not proficient" in math.

Union teachers know that many of their colleagues aren't great teachers. Only 12% of American students attend private schools, but, 39% of Chicago public school teachers send their children to private schools. Anti school-choice politicians are no less hypocritical: President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore (to name just a few) all send or sent their children to private schools.
