I've read a few times before eating guacamole is bad but eating avocado is good. Isn't guacamole just a mixture of chives, mashed avocado, cilantro, onions, and tomatoes with some oil? If not, man I've been doing it wrong. icon_neutral.gif

yourname2000 saidExactly. It's high calories (so account for that in your diet plans), due to the fats, but they're good fats. Lay off the olive oil, even better.

Well I cook with olive oil with practically everything. It's so tasty. icon_biggrin.gif

But if not Olive Oil. what would you recommend?

    Delicious Guacamole:

    Avocados (3-5)
    Tomatoes (1-2)
    Garlic (3-4 Cloves)
    Onion (1)
    Lemon (1 lemon)
    Cilantro (1 bunch)
Hot peppers (1-2+ depending on how spicy)

Dice up avocados, tomatoes & onion. Mince the garlic & peppers. Chop up the cilantro. Mix together in a bowl. Add lemon juice and salt & pepper to taste.

I'm pretty sure that avocado makes it's own natural oil, so you don't need to add any oil. It would be like adding olive oil to a stick of butter. People normally use lemon juice.

For cooking? Grapeseed oil--cooking with olive oil is not always a good idea--it can turn to trans fats at high temperatures.

EVO and avocadoes contain good monounsaturated fats...

Chives, really? Anyway, my guacamole recipe is different, but have you tried a little splash of apple cider vinegar and lime juice instead of the olive oil?

Totes mcgotes good for you, it's high in the right kind of fats - just don't gorge yourself on an entire bowl (hard to do, which is why I stay away from it, I could eat guac all day long).

Some people add sour cream when they make it, obviously don't do that, and yeah I've never had to use EVOO either.

I don't see any reason to add the olive oil but don't think that makes it bad for you. Avocados and guacamole are both chock full of healthy fats. The part that makes it bad for you is the chips. Avoid them and go for it.

I like using guacamole as salad dressing....just put a spoonful and stir it around to coat everything in deliciousness.

    Chives?

As for whether guacamole is good or bad: the dose makes the poison. Anything can be "bad" for you if it's overdone - even oxygen.

I don't think it's really that bad for you. I freaking LOVE guacamole but I only eat it on occasion, not every day or even every week.

So I say when you eat it, go all out, man! icon_cool.gif

Guacamole is amazing and healthy healthy healthy. Chips bad. And you might find some commercial guacamoles where they've added oils to save money on ingredients (and to give people the high-calorie rush).
But avocado is ~20% fat and low on omega-6. And of course once you make it into guacamole the caloric density becomes even lower (onions, tomatoes). In the Subway theme a multigrain bread has about 70% more calories per gram than guacamole.

Well, it's bad because you've left out the jalapeƱos and the garlic. Also forget the oil and add a squirt of lime juice. icon_rolleyes.gif

Guacamole is good because of the ingredients you list. None of those will hurt you.

And a little oil never hurts so long as it's the good kind. I use grapeseed oil and olive oil--I prefer grapeseed oil because of its neutral taste and vitamin E content--to saute vegetables just about everyday. Yet I still have a trim waistline.

I'm just not a fan of guacamole or avocados. I've tried them but they're just not my thing.
