I was backpacking the world then and missed out on three pivotal Miami cultural premieres:

    1) Miami Vice
    2) Golden Girls
    3) crack

It was amazing how "Miami Vice" totally rehabilitated Miami's image which reached an all-time low with "Scarface," even though both were about crime and drugs. Come to think of it, so was "Golden Girls." A friend of mine was a childhood friend of Estelle Getty's son. Her real name? Gettleman.

It was the first TV series I started watching when my family moved to the US. I love it then even though the adult humor went way over my head. It has only gotten better over time for me.

    Legends, all of them.

I remember being little, & watching it with my parents on Saturday nights which is funny, because no networks put hit sitcoms on Saturday's anymore. Also while my father loved it,my grandmother (his mom from Sicily) hated it! She didn't speak English, but say how disgraceful it was with the language, & all the talk of sex! Hahaha

I can't believe it was that long ago. I never watched it during its original run, simply too busy to watch any TV except the news during those years. And I had the impression it was written for old ladies to watch, not my demographic.

I didn't see it until 1996, the show out of production, when I used to have an afternoon martini at a Seattle gay bar (Slaughter's, renamed C.C. Attle's). Their old location had a wall of TV's, and at 2 PM they'd all start showing the same Golden Girls reruns. It was the first I realized how popular it was with gay men.

Maybe it was the gin got me interested, but I began to enjoy the show, sitting on a bar stool. Later my first partner was a fan, and we'd watch it most nights on cable at home in the early 2000s. Now I've seen most of the episodes multiple times, and rarely watch it. But 27 years! It actually doesn't look that old, except maybe for the 1980s Floridian furniture, and clothing when male actors appear. And all the actors dead, except for the immortal Betty White.
