I'm still in the process of working towards my goal (mass gain in chest and arm areas, while defining my back)...however, I wasn't sure what the best approach would be?

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm at the gym from 3-4pm, should I consider at least a 1/3 of this time spent with free weights?

Everyone says that free weights are the bomb, but my profile picture was achieved through machines only--it was all I had.

I've given a similar effort this summer on free weights but haven't gotten the same results.

Conclusion: like with any dietary advice, do what works for you and don't rely too heavily on dogma.

I suggest tht you give free weights a try. I started with machines and had MUCH better results after switching to free weights. Plus, free weights will help you gain functional strength for daily activities - especially exercies like the deadlift, bent over row, and standing shoulder press - whereas machines are less capable in this regard. You can still use machines to supplement the free weights - especially if you don't have a spotter around. Then machines that mimic the chest press and other exercises where you would want a spotter are good. For example, you could use free weights until you are feeling muscle fatigue and then do a couple of sets on the machine to really work the muscle to failure.

    Hope this helps.

hmmm It depends what suits you at the time. Free weights are good and so are machines. I combine the two, Its like machines give you constant tension all the time but free weights work the stabilizer muscles.

So take the benefit of both and use both if possible.

I've always used a mix of free weights and machines. I couldn't tell you the ratio historically, but of the routines I'm currently doing my Monday/Wednesday routine is all free weights. My Saturday routine is almost exclusively machine, save one exercise. I think proper form is probably more important.

I use mainly machines. I work out by myself, and when I use free weights I tend to go lighter so I don't get trapped under the bar. I can push myself more on the machine.
