I just had to share this column from the Sydney Morning Herald in response to yesterdays violent protests in Sydney which injured police and caused destruction of property. This all for a film which has resulted in the deaths of US diplomats and yet has been far from endorsed by the US or AUstralian governments.

    (Source: http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/an-open-letter-20120915-25ziq.html)

HAVE we Sydney-siders got this straight?
Because on the other side of the Pacific, somewhere in California, some loser has thrown together some kind of amateur internet video insulting your particular god, you think it justifiable to:
    Take over the Sydney CBD.
    Cause willful damage to property.
Throw rocks at police officers who are doing nothing more than their duty.
Hold up such ludicrous signs as “Behead all those who insult the prophet.”
We have to ask: Do you have the first clue as to the ramifications of your actions? Do you not understand that the net result of such irresponsible, appalling action is to give ample fuel to every racist in the country to reinforce every bad stereotype they have ever had of you, and that will affect badly the hundreds of thousands of other peaceful and law-abiding Islamic Australians?

In short, WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!
Get this straight, and quickly: some of you may be from countries where this kind of thing is acceptable. But it is NOT acceptable in this country.
In this country you are free to worship whatever god you damn well please. Others are free to worship their gods.
And I am free to say it is all nonsense over imaginary friends.
But you are not free to create the mayhem you did yesterday, simply because you don't like a freaking video!
Racists have said for years, “If you don't like the way we do things here, go back to where you came from.” The net result of your actions yesterday is that – for those people specifically disgracing themselves in the CBD yesterday, not the vast bulk of Islamic Australians – much of the country now feels the same.
    Nice work.

What possible association would they have to Australia? The movie wasnt even made there? I can kinda see the riots in north Africa associating the movie to the US cuz it was made here....and you know all 315 million of us are identical.

    My Point EXACTLY Caslon!
I mean in some islamic countries people are not allowed to practice other religions (or and not able to freely express their beliefs like in the US, UK, Aus, etc).

EDIT: It was initially targeted at the US Consulate (Sydney has the largest Islamic population in Australia).

A bunch of Australians attacked the US Consulate in Sydney? Really? ...Australians?

come to think of it ....it's kinda odd.....but the one place there havent been riots is in....wait for it.....the US. I guess the muslims here can distinguish between one nut case and the whole country.

Generally they only consider themselves Australian when it suits them (warning controversial) much like the elements of their religion they choose to follow and which to not.

Well, they cant pick and choose. People are going to stop tolerating them if the cant mind their ps and qs.

Here in the US the muslims are quite well integrated, I think. I know in my city the police are out by the mosques on Friday only to do traffic and crosswalk duty, cuz most drivers arent used to looking out for crowds of folks walking to "church" on Friday.

The majority of the muslim community are good citizens here - unfortunately its the actions of extreme minorities within the community that like to stir up trouble at any opportunity. This reflects badly on the wider community and does nothing to progress tolerance and harmony.

I think in Europe they are much more ghettoized. France may be the extreme....speaking of France....no protests there! The French arent taking any guff in their country.
