Mitcham performs well in 10m, advances
    August 22nd, 2008

Out Australian diver Matthew Mitcham has qualified for the semifinals in men’s 10m platform diving, finishing second in the preliminary round, missing the top seed by just over 30 points. Both American divers, Thomas Fincham (7th) and David Boudia (6th), have also qualified. Whereas Mitcham barely made the semifinals of the 3m springboard and failed to make the finals, he has set himself up for a serious run at a medal with his prelim performance. NBC will surely show his dives tonight in primetime; and it will be interesting, with their commentators often talking about athletes’ girlfriends, husbands and personal lives, if they’ll mention that he’s the only openly gay male athlete in Beijing.

He may have a chance in winning metal, even gold!I`m so rooting for him!!Everybody please remember to watch the game when it`s on!

icon_eek.gifwell,how do I respond to THAT?I only wish everybody do their best, and may the best win, that`s all I can say.icon_rolleyes.gif

OK seriously,so far it seems china could win another gold. But I`m rooting for Matt. Was discussing this with some chinese faghags on other sites, and their attitude REALLY PISSED ME OFF.I do consider being a gay boy myself is much more important than being a chinese to me.under circumstances like this,I`ll always stand by us gays.icon_razz.gif

supposedly there's only about 4 or 5 olympians in the entire olympics that are out.. anyone know if there's more? that can't be possible ... is being an out olympian so taboo??

(btw the 2 american divers seem pretty gay if you ask me..)

Um the handstand dives where they back their butt up to the platform....icon_rolleyes.gif

They're all gay until proven otherwise LOL. Matthew is just the honest one in the bunch. I smirked when they commented that the two American divers were rooming together, bow chiki bow wow. LOL.icon_rolleyes.gif

It's taboo in the judging events to be gay, like diving and gymnastics. Gay men seem to be judged much harsher, so guys choose to not come out. Even though as far as I understand it, most of the male judges at these events are gay. So it seems like it should not be a major issue, but unfortunately it is. I just read an interesting article about it, I should try to find it

    http://www.outsports.com/os/index.php/Olympics/2008/In-Beijing-Olympics-only-5-openly-gay-athletes.html

It's a good article, but it doesn't really address what I just talked about, but I can't remember where I read about gay judges harshly judging openly gay athletes. If someone knows which article I am talking about please post!

Surprising Matthew Mitcham is the only out gay man in the olympics according to the article.

But honestly, did anyone else notice how Boudia and Finchum walk around, even their mannerisms... At one point tonight Finchum was walking around with his shammie on his head like a drag wig.

But I do understand why more athletes don't come out. It can seriously affect endorsment deals in the future. Look how people are up in arms today over Hallmark printing Gay Marriage cards.

Perhaps one day the talking heads will comment not about how dominant China (or some other country) has been in diving... but how dominant gay people have been in the sport! (:
