Our PM crossed the floor to vote against with the opposition 'Liberal' party or should I more correctly say 'conservative ' party.

yep that whiney little bitch Abbott has a lot to answer for. Thank god most people are starting to see him for what he is.

And how Gillard can "live in sin" in the lodge and vote that way is beyond me

Abbott not allowing a 'conscience vote' is utterly callous. The liberal party really needs to be renamed the 'conservative' party based on recent attitudes and policies. Typically he denied recent exposure as a bully in university politics.

that's no surprise really, he's always been a hard arsed twat.
Is'nt it funny how the Liberals are called that here, everyone form over seas never understands.

I think he'll be on his way out soon,
PS Im just watching the news and the Liberal senator is talking about how gay marriage will lead to beastiality marriage.
At least Abbott had the balls to sack him

Dare I say it might have been easier to push through an interim measure like the UK in the form of civil unions (which tends no to attract the strong religious opposition) and try and for gay marriage down the track once the dust has settled and the wider community see that the gates of hell havent opened.

This does not surprise me in the least. Goes to show that Australians are just as closed minded and bigoted as anyone, everywhere else.

Now where is that idiot from Australia who constantly comments on what goes on in America instead of looking to his own damn backyard?

Its not really all that surprising though, if you've been watching politics in Australia for the last 10-20 years the conservative views of the politicians isn't anything we should be surprised about really..

Politically we've pressured our parties and politicians into conservatively mainstream views for decades, it doesnt matter what side of the political divide you sit on, they're too scared to even consider something that may offend the religious fundies and local CWA .

Add to that the active campaigns from the Catholics, Christian Lobbies and the result is unremarkable.

I think that the Boomer generation will eventually retire and retire from politics here, progressive generations will be more and more pro-equality.

We also have the 'Gay marriage' label to blame for this, I think that it's been overhyped to the max, I cringed every time it was referred to as 'gay marriage' when in fact it should have been a bill to provide marriage equality.

The disappointing thing is though, that I dont think the views of the politicians actually reflects the view of the people they represent, at least polling on the topic suggests thats so.

I'm not sure who you refer to, maybe your block list should be longer? icon_smile.gif

There were some Members with private bills for just that waiting, hopefully they will manage to get them across the line in the interim.

    Yeah

I agree they should've gone down the Civil Ceremony route like us in the UK.

Hopefully it'll happen eventually, as it will in the US.

Australia is still a very backwards country. Melbourne and to an extent, Sydney are quite forward thinking in regards to sexuality but they're the exception not the rule.

I disagree about Australia being a backward country.

It's not, just as the US or the UK isn't.

It's just there are still a lot of ignorant, backward thinking, bigots in positions of power.

In other news, things are looking more positive for state-by-state gay marriage reform. ACT, Tasmania and now NSW are in positions to get a bill passed.

Also, Sen. Cory Bernardi has re-affirmed his status as the nation's biggest asshole.

    This just in...
    Priscilla is relocated to Canada
now called "Priscilla Queen of the Tundra"

Kidding aside hopefully the change will happen state by state even though it is a national issue.

An openly gay Liberal (Opposition) senator voted against the Bill - I guess if we can't expect the support of the Gay members of Parliament, why would we expect it from the Heterosexual members?

The Age 'theage.com.au"Openly gay Liberal Senator Dean Smith spoke against the bill, saying opinion in the gay community was divided on the issue. "By not agreeing to same sex marriage, I'm not choosing to endorse discrimination against my fellow gay and lesbian Australians, or to be disrespectful to their domestic relationships... instead for me, it's an honest acknowledgement of the special and unique characteristics of the union described as marriage," he said.

True_Blue_Aussie (formerly known as Pattison) has repeatedly stated he does not support gay marriage and his views are consistent with many heterosexuals of his generation. He is certainly not representative of the majority of gay men in Oz.
