Some people get along with their parents but cant get close with them due to their different personalities or problems caused by either the parents or their children , what kind of relationship you have/had with your mom and dad icon_question.gif

I get along with my mom, but could never be her "best friend." Our views on life are completely opposite.

No, I started looking after my mum from the age of 14, she was mentally unstable and couldn't look after her self properly anymore.

I stopped talking to my father at 16, it's only recently that we've started speaking again and he's still that arrogant arse hole that he was when I was 16.

But I got two of the coolest little brothers ever cause of him so I tolerate him to a point!

Well from two different angles here:

As a kid I got along with both of my parents quite well. We were very close, especially my mom and I and then when she died, my dad and had continued a very close relationship.

As a parent, I have a close relationship with all 3 of my kids. I remain the parent and not the friend. I give unconditional love and support and am always there for them. I provided tough love when necessary in a parental way.

I learned from the best and I gave back to the even better. icon_smile.gif

I love my parents, but I'm not friends with them. I'm a junior version of both my parents. I've got my mom's penchant for melodrama, and my dad's bone dry sense of humor. My dad stood up for me at our wedding. When I really need to discuss personal stuff, I call my mom (after my husband, of course). She and I think a lot alike.

But, I'm not friends with them. They're my parents, not my peers.

Good friends, but not best friends. My mom and I don't have much in common besides our humor and personalities.
My father and I have nothing in common. At least that I will admit. NOTHING icon_evil.gif.

My parents are wasps. I love them but do not like them. But they would do anything for me. Very complicated situation...

i get on fine with both mom and dad. And I plan to keep it that way.
but maybe i just got lucky, cuz I have good parents who love me. Never was abused, never was a victim of sexual abuse either. No druggie or alcoholic parents, etc... they're pretty much awesome. and I love 'em.

We were close and I miss them greatly, but "best friends" is not what parents were in my day, nor do I think they should be now.

My parents' and my relationship is more like that of business partners. Keep each other close, but always watch out of the corner of your eye. Mostly my doing due to political differences. My younger brother was the "apple in their eye." Typical little right wing dick.
Working for a family owned company, I have to deal with father several times a week. But the last time we were together as a "family" was at Nigel's, (my younger brother), send off , [funeral], several months ago. Father and I shook hands, and mother and I hugged once. LOL.....that's our relationship.

-sorry for the in-depth description. Just a really bad day with father today at the office. icon_rolleyes.gificon_mad.gif

I have been very close to my parents for most of my life, but now I am trying to create a bit of distance and boundaries.

Me and my parents get along great! I was a shit disturber as a kid but things are much better now.
I never thought about it like this (feels a little weird), but I guess I could consider my own parents as good friends icon_smile.gif

My parents were emotionally distant alcoholics. They probably loved me and my brothers, but I always felt a sense of irritation that "those damn kids are always taking away my/our me/us time." I grew up resenting them and their preference for gin over their kids. Honestly, and I know this sounds horrible, I don't miss either of them (they've both passed away).

I am really good friends with my parents. Best friends would feel a little weird because there needs to be a little bit of a boundary between a person and their parents.

I'm close to both my parents but they were never the "cool" parents like some of my friends had growing up. I think they were a bit overprotective and strict but it probably helped keep me out of trouble. So best friends with them? No.
